DIY Shadow Mats

Hey all, just a quick question.

Has anyone here ever made their own shadow mats? If you don't know what I mean, think of cleaning mats with "shadows" for where the disassembled parts should go. I'm trying to make my own, and just looking to see if anyone else has before I start brainstorming ways to haha.

Currently I'm thinking burlap, with a grease pencil to start, and a paint pen to finalize the lines?

Make sure you test any prospective paint with the solvents you typically use for cleaning. Nothing like "cleaning" your favorite firearm and getting dissolved paint on bits that take a stain that won't come out. Many paints are "acrylic" meaning plastic. I've had insect repellents and cleaning solutions soften or dissolve several types of paint over the years.
