I see there has been a media blitz trying to assert Nixon a Republican was for a total ban on handguns. What is actually quoted is that he was for a ban on "saturaday night specials". Now many of us know there is a difference between the quality of true cheaply made saturday night specials banned by the GCA of 1968 and small concealable quality made handguns. Saying that he wanted to ban "all handguns" when he just said "saturday night specials" is like trying to fertilize the garden with a pile of old manure because the new stuff is too hot for the garden:eek: The people who would take our rights are grasping at straws and throwing mud seeing what will stick.....

So are you claiming Nixon was not, in fact, recorded saying this?

“I don’t know why any individual should have a right to have a revolver in his house,” Nixon said in a taped conversation with aides. “The kids usually kill themselves with it and so forth.” He asked why “can’t we go after handguns, period?”

Nixon went on: “I know the Rifle Association will be against it, the gun makers will be against it.” But “people should not have handguns.”

I started laughing so hard I lost my breath when they started using this. I hope he did say it. It seems in character certainly.
I will be happy to have this in my quiver to use as an arrow to the heart of some hippie anti-gunner. "Yep, you and Tricky Dick agree, so what does that say about who you are?"
As far as I'm concerned the man was a brilliant egomaniac who had a talent for foreign policy, and in all probability some mental illnesses that really needed treatment. That doesn't really bother me, he was effective at keeping us from having air filled with mushroom clouds.

Even if based on fact I think there are those who are trying to spin this to get political traction. How bad is the current president slipping on thie issue if he has to quote Nixon..."I'm not a crook". Seems like the last person they would want to quote.

I don't see this one going anywhere productive. It's not firearms, accessories, or civil rights, and there's not even a link to a specific article that we could discuss.
