Discuss - Best Lightweight, SHTF, 7.62 Combat Rifle

Since you said, "Combat Rifle", I can only assume what "S" has "HTF"... but I think others would be quite foolish to not offer the recommendation of a solid AK-47 variant by a reputable manufacturer; like Arsenal.

It's about as rustic and reliable as any rifle will ever be, and in 7.62x39 it's got reputable ballistics. Couple it with some 30 round magazines and don't worry about it. But make sure you have a good sling that doesn't cut to your shoulder bone if you're going to be walking.

Personally, I think you're better off with a .223 if things go south, considering the 50-60% more ammo you can carry at the same weight; but to each his own.

I'd be tempted to go 223 myself as well but to fit with the op request I'll vote for the Springfield Socom II

I don't know of any battle rifles in 308 (7.62 NATO) that I'd call light at least when you compare them to AKs and ARs.
The new SCAR Heavy (FN Offering) is supposed to be quite good, but I have yet to fire one.

The FN-FAL Para Model is another that gets very high marks if it's built by someone that knows what they are doing. DAS and Arizona Responce are good.

If you want better practical accuracy, range and ergonomics then you can get with an AK, and more power then you get with a 5.56 round, you might look at a light weight AR-15 in 6.8 SPC.

Absolute dittos on the Socom.

That thing is balanced pretty well, and the weight doesn't seem excessive. Probably makes it really sweet to shoot quick follow-up shots.

Nice rifle...

although, I could do without about 2/3 of the Pic rails on the forend.

Light weight + .308 = recoil pad?

also probly should say 'general purpose' instead of 'excrement traveling to and impacting against the impellers of a rotating ventilation apparatus'

I'd lean to .223 for SHTF. It is a very common round, and would likely be easy to find or trade for.

My SHTF stockpile is .22LR, 9mm and 38 Special. I keep the .357's for myself. I have a .17HMR that I plan to use for long-range stuff. I'm thinking I may stock up on some .223, even though I don't have a rifle (yet).

Best would be the AK-47 for 7.62. The 308/7.62 Nato would be more expensive, heavy, small magazines (less rounds per mag), harder to keep on target for follow up shots and less effective in close quarter combat. Same reasons the army dropped it as the standard battle rifle over 50 years ago.

I too would chose the AR.

Honestly, once the SHTF you are going to need at least a M14, and about 5000 rounds.
You are wise in going for 7.62x51 as everyone knows after about 100 yards the 5.56 is rubbish! Ive seen people being shot at 100yards and still continue to fight like nothings happened.

You should also seriously consider a pistol too,
Don't stuff around with 9mm though, no better than 22lr.
Get yourself a 1911 and about 2000 rounds for that.

And consider getting a decent scope for your m14, at least a 6-24x50 because once the SHTF its pretty much going to be sniper battles galore.

You can watch the news and just see that within a few years the worlds going to be in complete mayhem.

To whom it concerns,
I've shot a few birds the same size as ravens and they did survive being shoot with a 223, even 55gr vmax.

That don't mean they were very healthy though.:D

Marlin Model 60.

If the S has truly HTF, I just have to wait for your rifle to malfunction. It won't take long. :D

I don't have to out run the S. I only have to out run you. ;)

Title says it all.

It says you asked a stupid question that is going to get a lot of stupid answers and tell you more about what that poster thinks of when he reads "SHTF" than give any useful advice on a rifle; but a lot of times that is the discussion people want to have, in which case, carry on...

AK47 for 7.62x39 and the SCAR 17 for 7.62x51. AK47 is combat proven, 100% reliable, and will shoot anything that you feed it. The SCAR is reliable, modular, and a 1 moa semi-auto assault rifle. Get some.
