Disapointed-P-22 Walther

Today I had an opportunity to hold and dry fire a P-22.
Geesh! What a let down.
I love my P-99 and thought I'd really go for the P-22 but after handling the gun a while, I think I'll take a pass.
Too small for my hands and the trigger was awful (I know, it could be the particular gun I looked at). It also had awful balance in my hands.

I got to look at a Trailside 6" and really liked what I saw...all but the price. The trigger was unbelievably good for a factory gun.

Scratch the P-22 of the ol' "want-to-buy" list (unless I can "steal one" at an unbelievable price.)

I agree. I had been looking forward to even seeing one of them since they were announced way back when. I must say they are pretty cool looking, but that about sums it up. I have fairly small hands and it seemed uncomfortable even to me. The trigger just flat out sucked!

I've got one, and I'll agree, the DA trigger sucks. But the SA is very nice. Mines a really good shooter also. Sub 1" groups at 15 yards with middle of the road ammo. I can't wait to see what the target grade stuff does.

Maybe it's not a fair comparison, but any decent "target" .22 pistol that costs more than $150 will make sub-1" groups well past 15 yards.

The Walther P22 is interesting because it's a Walther DA pistol that shoots .22 ammo. But I wouldn't buy one for the sake of accuracy when a Ruger or Browning will kill it out of the box in that regard.

Do I want one? Sure, why not?

I bought one a couple of weeks ago and agree that the trigger leaves a lot to be desired. I'd even call it plain old bad. I also can't turn the safety off with one hand as the lever is very small and is almost flush with the slide. The main reason I bought it however is that it fits my 10 year old son's hands very well. Until now, I didn't have any handguns that he could comfortably grip and I have put off teaching him to fire a pistol even though he has been shooting a rifle for almost four years now.

I'd say that if you are looking for a target pistol, look elsewhere. Mine doesn't shoot nearly as accurately as my Ruger MarkII. I do think it is a really great gun for teaching kids or any one else with small hands. I've let several women try it out at the range and they all found it to be very easy to grip comfortably.

I've tested it with about 10 different loads including CCI Blazers, Aguila .22 SSS, Aguila Colibris, Remington Subsonics, Winchester Power Points, and a few I cant recall right now. It has been 100% reliable up to now. (It did not cycle the Colibris, as expected) I'm hoping to get the trigger worked on, I really don't care that the DA is heavy but the SA needs to be smoothed out before I can even begin to evaluate accuracy. Has any one else had a trigger job done on their's?

I'm happy with it for the role I am using it for, as a training pistol, but I would not have purchased it if it weren't for my wife and son. ( And eventually my daughter, 7)

Well...

I got mine to the range two days ago. Only had time for a functional check with Win 40gr power points. 50 rounds, 100% reliable in both mags. I agree that the trigger needs work in both SA and DA to wring max accuracy out of mine. I'm going to try shooting it a bunch, to see if the trigger will work in by itself, rather than spend a bunch of money, yet. Other than that, I like it. The grip size (I put on the larger insert) is ok, with the primary mag.

My bride liked it alot, but she hasn't shot enough to know about smooth triggers. She really liked the sights. I didn't tell her they were pretty much standard 3-dots. She's a newbie, and I'm starting her out on .22's. We'll get to the really good stuff later.

Still waiting (until Feb) for the 3.4" bbl from Earl's, to see how much recoil changes without the weight on the 5".

Why didn't I shoot it more? Had three other guns to work on. Brought 'her' M21 for some practice. Shot the PPK/S with new grips (Eagle), worked fine. Shot the 1991A1 with some handloads (CCI 300, 10.2gr Bluedot, Hornady 200gr XTP) that worked great. Excellent accuracy. Bluedot is kind of dirty, but other than that, I like it. Then it started to rain.

Ditto. Did NOT like the P-22 when I held it.

How about a nice Wilson with a .22LR conversion kit. Talk about a shooter! (Kinda spendy, though)

Has anybody tried a CZ75 with the 22 conversion? Wondering how that is - they have a great trigger on those CZ75s!

Has anybody tried a CZ75 with the 22 conversion?
Yes. Outstanding piece of equipment. By all rights, calling the Kadet a conversion is kind of a misnomer. It's the same upper unit that the dedicated CZ Kadet ueses, so it's really more of a .22 cal upper unit than a conversion. It's all steel and very well made. Each unit requires a small bit of file and stone work to make it fit, but it's not beyond the skill level of any one to do. I'm all thumbs, and it only took me about 15 min to do. If you take your time and don't try to rush things, you end up with a very acurate fit. I left my CZ frame stock, but I imagine with a Champion trigger and sear, and a Kadet upper, the CZ would run right up there with the Smith Model 41 and the Browning 5.5.
