Dirty barrel

My Contender 45/70 barrel was filthy after shooting a half a box of Remington 300 grain factory ammo. Is the ammo old, dirty ammo or is this unburnt powder because of the short 14 inch barrel? I don't have the same results with my 44 mag barrel or 17 barrel.

The 45-70 holds a lot of powder. That combined with the short barrel adds up to a lot of combustion and a lot of unburnt residue. Compared to more efficient burners like the .357, things could get "filthy." Fortunately it's likely just surface crud and cleans off just as quick and easy as other guns.

Factory .45-70 is not designed for the short barrel...

You can get cleaner by rolling your own...

Thanks guys. I was thinking the same thing but wanted to check. It did clean quick and easy with a bore snake and Hopps #9.
