DIRTY Ammo????

Good Morning.

I have a 9mm Glock 19 on order, and I have been looking into buying target ammo (115gr)...when I can find it.

I had been told to use either Fed. Am. Eagle (red box), or CCI Blazer Brass (black and beige box), or Rem. UMC, or Winchester (white box), or Speer Lawman.

Recently I have been reading posts that the CCI Blazer Brass, and Speer Lawman ammo is DIRTY.

What does "dirty ammo" mean, and can it harm the firearm? Are Lawman and Blazer Brass "dirty" ammo, and if so, what others might you recommend? In today's market, and 9mm ammo you can find begs to be bought...unless it is wise to skip some brands and wait for the supplies to increase?

Thanks.

Vinne

"Dirty" ammo will typically release more smoke when fired and "gunk" will build up on your gun quicker. Basically, the combustion isn't as clean so there are more waste products left over to foul up the gun. Think of it like low octane gasoline.

I can't comment on what you mentioned except to say I stick with Federal American Eagle and it's definitely not dirty. Everyone has their own opinion on ammo.

I've not found Blazer aluminum to be too dirty and shoot it quite a bit. I have stopped buying the Winchester White box because I find it to be dirtier than some other ammo. American Eagle seems fine and so does MagTech.

Agree with Republicrat that everyone has their own opinion of ammo just like they do on guns. What one person likes another doesn't. Best thing to do is buy a box or two of the stuff you want to shoot and try it.

I've put Blazer Brass through my .45 and found it to be pretty good..I used Independence ammo and it was a lot dirtier than I was expecting..

I think the whole "dirty ammo" topic is much ado about absolutely nothing. I enjoy cleaning my guns and would do so whether I shoot 10 rounds or 200. To me, the difference between "clean" ammo and "dirty" ammo is about 2 patches and 2 extra passes through the bbl.

Big......hairy......deal.

Lol... I couldn't agree more. As soon as someone finds ammo that doesn't leave any build-up or powder residue PLEASE let me know! :D Until then, I pretty much consider all ammo to be "dirty".

I couldn't care less either. I shoot whatever ammo is AVAILABLE. I don't see how I can be picky these days. You shoot what you can find. End of story.

+1 exactly. But, like also said earlier, I wouldn't be concerned with it at all unless there was a box of blazer on the shelf next to WWB for the same price. Then I would choose the blazer over the WWB, but would not inconvenience myself over it.

As long as it's brass cased and you clean your pistol after your range outing you be fine w/ any of the named brands.

+1 to that!

When it comes to FMJ's or target ammo I buy and shoot whatever is cheapest at the time. The best target ammo I've shot is actually the Monarch stuff they sell at Academy Sports and Outdoors. Just clean the gun after every trip to the range it you shouldn't have a problem. If you do, get a different gun.

Other than spending more time cleaning the gun after shooting it, I wouldn't worry about using "dirty" ammo if that's all you can find. You are gonna clean it anyway so it doesn't really matter all that much.

I waffle back and forth on Lawman. Sometimes it's ok, but lately I've started calling it the 1 and 10 ammo.

About every 1 in 10 jams on me

Federal, never had one single jam ever.

I don't mind a little smoke and carbon, but dislike unburned powder grains gunking up the works. That stuff should burn, not fill the gun with abrasive pebbles/flakes/balls. I have found Remington/UMC ammo to be particularly bad in this respect.

I have used Remington in 9mm, (Federal) American Eagle in 9mm and 45ACP, and have been very happy with both.

The MagTech 250rd 'Shooting Size' in 45ACP that I've used has been "DIRTY". With each shot fired, a puff of black dust (i.e. powder & other stuff) blows out of the gun. In my mind, that's clearly 'dirty'. The area around the ejector port gets gunked up a bit faster and my shooting hand would also be blackened if I didn't wear a glove.

In my view, DIRTY won't really matter unless you plan to shoot 300+ rounds at a sitting OR if you notice that it's causing feeding problems. For 9mm and 45ACP, you should be good for a few hundred rounds, as mentioned. For my 22LR, dirty ammo fouls things up quickly to the point of causing a feeding problem.

You have a reliable Glock, no worries about ammo being 'dirty'. Just means you have a little more to clean up after a range session.

You want *really* dirty, try some Ultramax. My word, that stuff might as well have been black powder.

Dirty ammo means an ammunition that gives off a lot of smoke and leaves a lot of carbon deposit on your gun. It means lots of barrel cleaning and all.

just my opinion.

Shoot safe.
