Dilemma: Trade for a Beretta???

You may remember a recent post about my search for a 92FS. Well, one kind of fell in my lap last nite. It seems a fellow down at the club is selling one, with two std-cap mags, which was bought between 5-10 years ago. He says it's had 35 rounds fired through it, and it made me laugh when he pulled out a box of ammo with three rows untouched to try and prove it.

At any rate, this thing was in excellent condition, both fit and finish and I really have no reason to doubt this fellow. Here's the dilemma:

He wants a LOT of money for it, $550 to be exact. He wants to buy a short-barrel .38 revolver because the gun is "too much for me." Well, I have a Colt Cobra .38 sitting in the drawer and as much as I love this gun I have thought of trading it away w/a few dollars to get the Beretta.

HOWEVER, I have not made the deal as yet, and I think I won't be making the deal because the one firearm I've traded away I have tried to track down for months to no avail and I know I'll regret trading something away, even for something as great as this Beretta.

If I had to guess, I'd say that one or two folks has been in this position before. Any thoughts?

$550 seems to be a fairly average price for the 92FS, there are hundreds of them for sale on http://www.gunsamerica.com for $499-$599, I would think that you could easily find one at your local gun shop whenever you want.

You obviously really don't want to sell your Cobra and Berettas are very common. I'd hang on to the Cobra until you get the $500 together for the Beretta then go get one.

I've traded away 4 firearms and with 1 exception I reget doing so nearly every day.

A used Beretta 92 should go for $400-450. You can find them new for under $500 at large gun shows.

The Colt Cobra will never be made again, and will only continue to go up in value.

I think with these 2 peices of info, your decision should be easy to make.

I concur with the majority. Colt Cobras are fine revolvers, and they're no longer manufactured. Beretta 92F models are fine pistols, but they are plentiful and currently in production. Regcaps are among the cheapest of all the Wondernine mags...they usually go for less than $50. Right now my local gun shop is selling a box full of 9mm Beretta regcaps for $24.99 each.

Keep the Cobra. Save up for the Beretta...you'll always find another NIB or LNIB Beretta 92F for under $500, but the Cobra is harder to come by.

lendringser, which gun shop in which city? I sometimes go up to eastern Tennessee on buisness.

Adventurer_96, if your friend cannot handle the recoil of a 9mm out of a 34 ounce gun (I assume that's what he means by too much gun. I guess he might mean that it shoots better than he can.) what makes him believe that a snubby is a good idea.

Will any .38 special snubby do? You can get a very good quality one for much less than $550. He can get his snubby, you can get your Beretta and still have the Colt. You will save money this way.

The latest...

I've decided that the Cobra will stay in the family, basically for all of the aforementioned reasons. Now, the only question is whether or not I want to buy this particular Beretta.

He's going to a show next week with me and I hope to point out the lower prices at some of the dealers. I'd really like to buy this one because it's exactly what I want, down to the original box and papers that came with it. I haven't seen that at the shows, and the dealers always have sales tax to tack on to bump the price up. I'd almost be willing to pay the extra $50 over a show price for a LNIB because he has this stuff and the two std-cap mags that came with the gun from the factory. I already have three std-cap mags for the 92 from a friend of mine, but I want to have a pistol which was manufactured pre-ban in case I ever move to Massachusetts! ;)

As to being "too much gun" for him, he is a smaller guy and thinks of this thing as a cannon. He's much more comfortable with a wheelgun. I'm going to do a closer inspection this week to really check the finish and mechanics as best as I can. The only big hangup I'm expecting is from my checkbook!
