Different scenario for me...help me choose

Always bought my firearms for very distinct purposes. I didn't have to like the looks...just had to be good for the purpose.

For a while, I thought I was out of purposes.

Then I was watching a tv show (Justified) starring a marshall who carried a modern semi automatic in a belt attached leather holster. I guess you could say I became smitten- I now want a carry pistol and leather holster.

My purpose is to have a good looking, quality carry gun that draws well. Caveat- except for an iwb for a sig 238, I have almost no experience with holsters like I'm desiring. I say that knowing some holsters are designed with different retaining angles. There must be a reason.

So, I'm wondering how you may have pondered my situation. I'm a little excited to do something more for fun.

Thanks,
John

Let me put it another way- what pistol inspired you to spend much more than you had to in order to acquire said pistol and why?

Though the holster world seems to be going Kydex, there are still plenty of good leather holsters available. Most stores don't have a large selection of leather holsters anymore. Most shops I see have Kydex and all manner of cheap, a few sizes fit all but nothing well, nylon holsters. Different holster angles, as well as straight up and down, are available. I've used both the straight up and down, and what was commonly known as the "FBI" cant. It's just personal preference. But whatever type you get used to over the months and/or years, it's often a challenge to switch to a different cant, retention system, etc. later. I have carried several different types over the years, but mostly use the IWB type holsters now days.

As to what pistol I've probably paid too much for; A Bunch. Why? Because I wanted them. That "Fun" thing. I think very highly of having fun;) Have some!

I carry a SIG Model 227 comfortably and well concealed with the Galco "King Tuk" iwb holster. It's very adaptable in terms of cant and position location.

You dont have to carry a compact tiny gun to have comfort. My 5" 1911 is my carry gun and is extremely comfortable and draws very smoothly from my cheap blackhawk leather IWB. Me no likey kydex holster

While not my primary carry, I love my VP9. While not a bargain basement purchase, it's cost is still reasonable. I like striker fired pistols. I appreciate the reputation of HK. It's ergonomics to me are excellent. It's very visually appealing. It has never failed to go bang and cycle properly. Accuracy is good.

I have always carried IWB but have liked the idea of a good looking OWB leather holster. I recently got a Desantis Speed Scabbard from Midway. For a sale price of $40, I couldn't pass it up. So far, I love it. It looks good, has good retention, and is comfortable to wear. It hasn't replaced my IWB setup but I think I will get some great use out of it during the coming fall and winter months when concealment under a jacket will be a cinch.

Hope my insight/experience is something along the lines of what you are asking.

I have several Bianchi Cyclone 111 holsters...for my 686..629..1911...BHP....I like the thumb break...and the option of strong side or cross draw.....and with some leather work...I can adapt the 111 to a shoulder holster rig...with a stiff leather insert though the belt slot..and shoulder straps attached to that...so any of my holsters can work as a belt or shoulder rig....

I'm pretty satisfied with DeSantis holsters as I feel they offer a decent product at a fair price. As far as an inspirational pistol goes I would have to say that my Colt Combat Commander, part of a limited run by Colt's Custom Gun Shop, would be my "over and above" acquisition. Now granted this was many years ago but even so this gun at the time represented a very serious outlay of cash (long before I ever had an credit cards), but I just had to have it. And I'm glad I did as it has been incredibly reliable as well as incredibly accurate all these years.

Thanks for the replies; good input for decisions. My resolve to obtain something attractive, effective and maybe even practical (maybe) is being strengthened. I'm looking forward to slapping something into a nice leather holster and hitting the range.

Love the Colt bannockburn; sweet lookin' gun.

I'm really curious about 9mm 1911 models. I've read that follow up is easier and hold more rounds. I've never shot a 1911 other than my sig 238; so I really dont know experientially.

Thanks again guys. And just so you know, I'm probably waiting for a sweet deal or Christmas time til I buy. Or not ;)
