Different grips for Colt Trooper III

I've got a Colt Trooper III 4" blued revolver that I recently picked up. Pretty good condition overall, but one of the grips has a crack in it and I'd like to replace them.

The grips on the gun are factory, are made of walnut, and are the oversized style that completely covers the metal grip frame.

I see that Gun Parts/Numrich arms carries factory repacement grips, but they list many different styles.

Could anyone elaborate what the is meant by the description:

"Service Grips. Slim, checkered walnut, manufactured by Colt. Grips W/ Medallion, J Frame, Service, Slim Carry, Checkered Walnut, Original" ?

Would these be the style that would expose the front and backstrap?

Thanks in advance to all who respond!

:)

If memory serves me the standard set of grips for the trooper are like the ones you now have which are oversized and cover most of the grip frame. The service type was also available. These were smaller checker grips which would help concealment or possilby someone which smaller hands. I have a set of the service stocks in my miscallenous stuff which was given to me years ago by my police partner who was carrying a Colt Trooper. His trooper was unique in that it had a 5 inch barrel.

There are several diferent FACTORY grips for the Trooper MK 3.
The "target" type come in two styles, a square butt, and a slightly rounded butt. Some are made of genuine American walnut and some are made of "hardwood" All the hardwood type that I've seen had silver medallions, but so to did some walnut ones.

The smaller "service" type are usually walnut and follow the grip frame and don't fill in behind the trigger guard, so they are fairly small. These are the grips you listed in your post.

Third are the rubber Pacmeyer with gold Colt medallions.
Be aware that grips for the Trooper Mark V and the King Cobra don't interchange with the Trooper Mk 3.

The appropriate grip for your gun would be the walnut Target type.

These often show up on Ebay, so you can see pretty much what you're getting.

If you order from Gunparts, make sure to specify you want WALNUT grips.

Most of the grips from CDNN ARE NOT genuine factory grips. They look very close to factory but aren't.
