Differences between S&W model 10 and 64

I have a serious itching for a S&W model 10 heavy barrel... or maybe a S&W model 64.

Now what exactly is the difference between the two besides the 64 being stainless?

As you can see, I don't know a whole lot about Smith and Wesson.

Thanks.

Model 10 - Blue Steel
Model 64 - Stainless Steel

That's it, they are the same gun except for the steels used.

The older Model 10`s came with what we called a "pencil barrel" whereas the newer have the heavy barrel. Except for the fact that the older 10`s had actions like glass, the stainless is the same gun.

Stainless vs blued or nickel-plated carbon-steel. That's the difference. Plus, M64's were introduced some time later than M10's, ( and the pre-model-number M&P)which have been around a looooooooong time.

And, Dinosaur, I have recently seen one Model 64 with a pencil barrel. I had never seen one before, but have since been told that the very first 64's were made with the pencil barrels. I now regret that I didn't buy it for the novelty. It was priced at $194. I may check at the pawn shop in a nearby town to see if they still have it next time I am there.:D

Clemson.

Wow! AFAIK the 64 was introduced well after Smith stopped using the thinner barrel. I could be wrong I guess. The Blue Book only lists heavies. Maybe C.R. Sam would know more.

There was a guy I worked with at the police range who had his father`s old M&P duty gun. He had the `smith change it to 2". They told him they wouldn`t approve it for duty carry with the 4" but I don`t recall if he was allowed to use it as an off duty piece.

Snowdog, you didn`t mention if you wanted a 2 or 4" barrel. I`m not sure if the serial #s were the same for both but if you can find one with a serial # beginning with "C" they have excellent actions also. I don`t recall any "A" or "B"s but they might be the older M&P. Not "something like "6C as they would be later. I have a "D" which has a great action but the Cs are a bit better. Stay away from 6D & 9D as one of the series had terrible bluing, I can`t remember which.

Guys were selling their heavy barrel C`s for fifty bucks when they retired. Ouch!

I had a Model 10 3" RB and sold it when I retired.:( A guy I worked with in Brooklyn carried a Model 13 3" as a backup. They`re hard to find at a good price. I was never a fan of stainless.

Dinosaur,

Thanks for the alphanumeric nomenclature on different M10s and actions.
By the way, I am definately bent on a 4" heavy barrel.

Rballi,

Excellent pics, thanks for the comparison.

I've handled slim bbl. M64's and a friend once owned one. They exist, but were dropped fairly soon after production began, because most people wanted the heavy bbl.

These early M64's had stainless action parts, which were rumored to gall a bit and were softer than carbon parts and supposedly wore sooner. That probably affected timing sooner. However, I had one - with heavy bbl. - and had no trouble with it over a span of maybe ten years. Still, if I went looking for a stainless Smith today, I'd want one of the later ones with flash-chromed carbon internal parts.

I just bought a N.I.B. 4 inch Mod 10, square butt, pinned(of course) PENCIL BARREL........Beautiful! $ 250.00 I'm not going to shoot it. I have others to shoot.

Would love to find a decent M10 as a memory of the ones we were issued prior to the advent of Ruger Service-Sixes and the Berreta. The M10 always performed very well for me--the biggest problem they had was years of abuse.

Chief, you gotta find an old fart retired copper like me who still has his and is willing to sell. I`ll never sell mine as it was a gift from my aunt and she died 2 years ago. She saw me through 20 years of some tough times. :) Check the retirees in Fla. There`s hundreds of P.D. old timers there.

Have Gun, what is the first #/letter of the serial #? I`m curious as whether it started with A or B.

I bought a very nice Model 10 lightweight barrel for $155 at a gun show a few years ago.

A little surface rust, but no pitting, and very good trigger.

I ended up selling it to a friend as I wanted to free up money for something else.

I should have kept it.
