Differences Between 391 and 3901?

Hello All:

Am trying to decide between a Beretta 391 and 3901 "Ambassador". They look pretty close to the same gun, but if so, why the different number?

Can anyone tell me the pros/cons of each, or is there really much of a difference. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

The AL391 has a different gas system. Their forearms are much thinner than the 390 because of the gas system. The gas systems are very similar, the 391 is "supposed" to be a refinement of the 390 action. They use almost all the same part, but in different proportions, so they won't interchange, (Berettas well know for changing guns like we change underwear). On the 390 the gas release valve is a seperate piece, on the 391 it's integral to the barrel, but nearly the same, just positioned differently. The AL391's wrist/grip is wider/thicker than that of ther 390. Most but not all 390's have an angled receiver and all of the AL391's are rounded. All 390's have mobil chokes while some AL391's have them as well as the Optima and Optima Plus tubes.
