Difference in recoil between .44 and .357

I have a S&W 629 light hunter model, was thinking of getting a 627 for target shooting. How much of a difference in kick would the 357 have from the 44? Would the larger frame of the 627 keep the recoil lower than that of the 686 model?

There is a lot of difference between .44 and .357 in the kick area. I have a 629 4 inch that I would not dream of shooting one handed with mags in it. With the .357 I could shoot it one handed with no problem. What you are loading a .357 with could make a difference also.
Also, a heavy gun will kick less.

Not familiar with thw smith models. But-

In my redhawks(one 44 and the other 357) if I run a 180 grain bullet in each at the same velocity, I get about two-thirds more felt recoil with the 44. Even though the 357 is heavier.

Hope this can be of some help.

Edit: YAHOOO!!!!! my 1,000th post!!! :D

Diggers, at least two of my deer have been taken with my 44 mag shooting with one hand !One was because I had broken my left hand and it was in a cast. Practice and build up your muscles too....The 44 mag is about twice as effective as the 357 mag for hunting and has about twice as much recoil. You can learn to handle the recoil best by starting with light loads and gradually working up to full loads.

I can one hand my SBH, recoil isn't bad at all on the 7 1/2 inch barrel.. now keeping it steady is another story.

Noticed that taurus puts out an 608 model 357 8 shot revolver on a large frame. Pricewise, it's about 1/2 the cost of the 627. How bad is Taurus?

The recoil is less on a .357 compared to a .44 - quite considerably less! A .44 with a typical 240 grain bullet puts out 742 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle compared with 535 ft. lbs. in a .357 with a 158 grain bullet. Plus, you can shoot .38 specials out of the .357 and they offer very little recoil (320 ft. lbs. with a 158 grain). And the .38 special cartridges are cheap compared to the magnums - a box of 225 for $30 here. Hard to go wrong.

METE, thats cool. But Im guessing that your hunting gun in not a 4 incher and you didn't have to get off a second shot quickly.
