Difference between Sig P228 and P229?

What are the particular differences and which one is a better buy? Price is not an issue. Are hi-caps available for both models? As far as concealed carry, which caliber is more prefered? 9mm, .40, or .357sig? Last question is a tuffy but give it a try. Thanks.

The major difference is that the 228 is 9mm only. Also, the 228 has a formed metal slide, with a welded barrel bushing and a pinned in rear action, where the 229 has a machined steel one piece slide.
The design of the 229 was originally made to accomodate the added stress of the 40 S&W, and then rebarreled to 9mm, with 357 Sig as an added bonus.
There are hi caps available for both guns.
I carry the 229/40, as my personal preference, in 12 round hi caps, with 165 gn GoldenSabers.
For all intents and purposes, in 9mm, they're the same gun as far as shooting performance goes. The 229 was developed with similar frame dimensions as the 228, thus the similar performance feel.
Check out these links. The first is Sig's homepage, and the second is an informal SIg page with lots of good articles and reviews with compare/contrast between the models, as well as some history.

Hello All; In contrast the Sig P228 is perfectfly balanced; the P229 seems a
little top heavy, due to it's one piece
machined stainless steel slide. I prefer
the 228 for CCW carry; loaded with W-W
147 grain Black Talon's. :)

the main difference is the 228 has a folded sheet metal slide and the 229 has a CNC machined slide out of stainless steel. that adds about 1 1/2 ounces to the weigh of the gun and IMHO the 229 is better balanced in my hand because of this. this doesn't make a big difference on durability since on all sigs the weakest part is the aluminum frame (which will still last a while).

also as you know the 228 is only in 9mm and the 29 is in 9mm, .40 and .357sig. this is because the 228 couldn't hold up to the pressures the .40 produced so it needed a beefier slide.

Hi caps ara available for both but pricy. the 228s are around $99 and the 229 .40/.357sig are about the same or a little less. the 228 mags will fit in a 229 in 9mm.

the last question you asked is all in people's opinions and mine is a vote for the .357sig. i think the .357sig outperforms just about all other rounds in most situations. by that i mean other defense rounds, i'm not talking about hunting. i think the .357sig is a better round for LEOs and carry even over the .45 not to mention the .40 and 9mm. after the .357sig i'd go with the 9mm.

I think SIG Sauer slved the issue with the frames. This had been an issue with the 45 P220 and 9mm P226. I haven't heard of recent complaints.

I prefer the P228. For me it balances better and the trigger pulls, at least on the German and assembled pistols, is a tad smoother, especially in DA. I prefer the 9mm because it's soft recoil facilitates follow up shots and it's cheap to shoot.

SIG Arms has restricted the P228 and small batches are only released to us peons once in a while. The prices can be high, although some deals can be had. The P229 is of course easier to get. For the best deal find a local FFL who'll do the transfer and then locate the pistol yourself. Check out www.bachmangun.com and www.gunsamerica.com
