difference between s&w round butt and square butt

I guess theis question sort of goes in the gunsmith section, but it is very specific to revolvers,so here it is.
Can I take an older s&w square butt and make a round butt just by removing metal? Or is there a more serious difference between the two?
Thanks.

I stole this from the S&W forum, thanks Smithnut

Square butt on left, Round butt on right.

Yes, you can and Brownells has a template for doing the work. Be careful around the serial number. Both the front strap and the back strap have different contours.

Sw 686

My Smith and Wesson is a Round Butt L frame. I am told some older versions are Square butt.
Personally I like the look of wood grips ..but definitely prefer the rubber grips for shooting. Especially with the 357 mag cartridge.
Therefore the rubber Hogue style grips win out.

Just because brownell,s sells a template doesnt mean it,s a walk in the park. Has anybody here actually done the switch? Smith stopped making square butt in 1987. This summer i had my 686 sq butt at Smith.s custom shop when I asked about converting to rb the gunsmith said no. He said they did one once and it turned out bad, so I would think before you start (just removing metal).

no No NO!

Why would you ever want to do that to a fine gun? It has got to be a whole lot simpler and easier to just go out and buy one with a round butt.

Hey, and then you've got both!
