Difference between Glock 34 and 17L

These both appear to be longer-barrelled versions of the full-size 9mm Glocks. The 17L is a little longer than the 34. There must be some other important difference, though, right?

not really. the G17L came out a while ago and has a barrel length just a little over 6". the G17L is great for competition shooting, the long sight radius makes them easy to shoot accurately and the long barrel increases balistics of a cartridge. however all IDPA guns have to fit into a certain box to be legal for IDPA and the G17L is just a little too big. the sole purpose of the G34 was to fit into the box. it's barrel length is inbetween that of the G17's and the G17L's. some people like how the G34 points compared to the G17L and vice versa. i use a G24C in GSSF and love it.

If you can get a 17L you will like it! I like the longer sighting radius. I don't shoot IDPA so fitting inside of their box was no concern to me.

The long-slides are great. I'm happy with my G24 in .40. The 17L and 24 were originally intended for competition use, with 3.5 lb triggers and longer barrels and sight radii; but they were excluded from IDPA under the box rule. To stay in the game, Glock created the the practical/tacticals.

Interesting. I don't care about the almighty box, so I would probably wind up with the 17L over the 34.

However, I'm curious whether the few years between the introduction of these two pistols would give the 34 any technological advances. Did Glock do anything exciting after they made the 17L that they included in the 34? Oh, and are the magazines the same?

No mega technology advances really. The light framed Glocks are the same basic design internally. The heavier recoil models include an extra pin in the forward part of the frame.

Newer Glocks, including newer 17Ls, have a different breechface angle.

Internally the 17, 17L, and 34 use the same parts. The barrels, receivers, and slides have different part numbers.

The 17 and 34 use the same mags.

I suspect that the 17L will be a lot harder to find than the newer G34's.

I would also love to have a 17L myself!

Good Shooting"

G34 is better balanced and cheaper.
But 17L is more for collector's.

Can't shoot 17L is some comps but you can with the G34.
