Difference between Beretta 92F and 92FS?

Ok, I know the 92FS has the decocker/manual safety, but what is the 92F? I need to know before bidding on some auction. Thanks fellas.

The F was the version before the FS. You might remember some high pressure rounds being fired in the military contract guns when they where first adopted - causing the slides to come off. Beretta added a part (can't think of the correct name right now) that would stop the slide from seperating from the frame if one of these high pressure rounds was fired. The resultant change in design also caused the re name to FS from F. Hope that helps some.

FWIW - used FS's are selling for in the low 300's.

Good Shooting,
Rob

The mod consists of replacing the F hammer pin with a new FS hammer pin having an oversize head. Also machining a small channel in the bottom of the left slide rail for the oversize head to ride in.

The channel only extends a short way down the slide. It allows the slide to move freely over its normal travel. If the slide should break, the oversize head of the hammer pin will bind with the slide when the slide travels too far backward and the end of the machined channel contacts the oversize head on the pin.

As I recall, the left grip must be slightly modified to accomodate the larger pin head as well.

I believe that Beretta will perform the upgrade for a fee. If you stick to standard pressure rounds, I wouldn't sweat it...

Or, you could buy the FS hammer pin and have a decent machinist cut the channel in the slide. Then modify the grip or just buy a set of FS grips.

Good shooting,

John

I've had my 92 FS about a month now. Have put almost 1000 rounds through it already. Can't believe how accurate it is.

As already stated, the "S" suffix means it has the slide retention device added. You won't find any commercial ammo as hot as that which caused the problems. Commercial +P is about what NATO ball is loaded at.

It wasn't just the ammo that was the problem - the "F" model was susceptible to having the slide yanked off by the person at whom you were pointing the weapon (according to the History Channel's "Tales of the Gun" documentary). The FS models don't have this problem.
