Difference between Benelli M4 and M2 besides price

I was looking at a gun show over the weekend and I saw these beautiful M2's and my buddy has an m4, what are the differences?

One difference is that the M4 is gas-operated.

Is that the only difference? Does that affect the performance at all? How many of you guys have an M2?
