Difference between a Winchester Mod 290 and 190

Did not know just which forum to ask this question.

Recently purchased a Winchester 190 (or so the seller at a gun show said) but now after "Googling" am thinking that it
may be a model 290.

Reasons: pic of the actual 290 stock seem to match. The forestock has a bevelled wood on the end nearest the chamber area and on the main stock, the bottom has a white styrene (.040") material then a phenolic butt plate.
On the actual butt end, there too is the white material and the standard phenolic plate.

The dealer did mention that this model had no serial numbers so don't know if that would date it to Pre-1964.

The only other interesting item is that it is missing the "iron sight" but there is a small threaded hole where that should go and I read somewhere that some of these models had a plastic sight installed, so maybe it broke off.

The 290 is a fancy 190. Beyond that they are both about the same.

Go over to rimfire central and do a search under winchester. Lets of 190/290 threads there.

The 190 is a nice gun but it is a pain to reassemble after cleaning and the barrel is known for coming loose and moving forward. If you are getting misfires this is probably the problem. Also there is no "practical" way of getting a better trigger pull out of it.

I've got a 190. Great gun. I origianally thought that the 190 always came with a plain (uncheckered) stock and the 290 had the checkering. However, I have lately seen some 190s that came with checkering that looked just as nice as any 290.

Thanks to all for their input!!

As to misfires? Haven't had any, but then again, haven't put
this gun through any rigorous applications.

Actually I plan to just keep it clean, put it away with the rest of items I purchase, get an interest in then pack away.
