Did I harm my new 1911???

I just purchased a new Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Mil Spec. I test fired the pistol with some UMC 230gr ball. Function was perfect. When I went to clean the pistol, I was able to disassemble it with ease, but upon reassembly, I ran into trouble. First off, I must not have had the barrel postioned correctly, because I couldnt get the slide to go back to the dissassembly notch. I little wiggleing fixed that. I then made the mistake of lining up with the slide catch notch instead of the dissassembly notch. Needless to say all my strentgh couldnt get the slide stop back in. Even when I went to the correct notch, I wouldnt go in either! I finally learned you need to push up and in. It then went in easily. My only handgun experience has been with glocks and Military M-9's. Anyway, do any of you feel I could of damaged important parts through my inexperienced fiddleing? It seems to function correcttly, but Im still concerned. Thanks

I doubt that you harmed it unless you used a hammer or a vise to reassemble it. Yo may have scratched it up a bit, but if it appears to function now, it's most likely undamaged.
Enjoy your 1911.

I think everyone who owns a 1911 has tried at one time or another to put it back together incorrectly, including me. I might mention that I still try the wrong way once and a while.

No harm done.

Thanks, Actually, I was lucky, I dont think I put a scratch on it. I used force, but knew to back off when things didnt feel right. I did notice a small scratch under the slide stop on the frame, but it looks as though it occurs naturally by thumbing the release, as it is not visible when assembled.

I too had to get used to assembling/reassembling 1911s when I bought my Colt 1991A1. I was only used to Sigs, Berettas, Glocks, etc.... The Colt did take some getting used to, but the process is pretty easy now that I have took it apart a few times.....

I still remember when I disassembled and then reassembled my first
1911. I messed up big. I got it together after figuring out how, but
it took some time.

The Swiss and the Germans have invented simpler systems to disassemble
handguns.

Yet the simplest is the Glock.

The idiot scratch ! Welcome to the club. I think I did the exact same thing first time reassembling my 1911. I was pretty frustrated and worried too, even posted here with the same concerns (different name). Your gun is fine. You'll have an easier time putting in the slide stop if you line up the barrel link to the hole in the frame first. Do this by moving the slide back and forth until they are lined up.

1911 First time field stripping!

I also have to admit to doing the same thing. Recently I bought a Kimber Custom Eclipse II after reading the user's guide I field stripped the pistol to clean it before its first firing, and ran into the same problem. I to am use to ruger's, berettas *&*, Ect, With the Beretta being so easy. I wish all handgun torn down that easy !
