Ok, I got a new Ruger Target Competition model 2 wks ago, and while detail cleaning it, I noticed that the square cut in the bottom of the barrel receiver assy. (where the front lug of the frame engages into the barrel receiver assy.) on one side of the square opening the metal appeared ragged/ripped instead of machined, so in order to make it look better, I decided to go in to it with my dremel and finish it out.
I cleaned up both sides, than polished it, took off appox .020" on each side to make it even.
Not thinking far enough ahead, I didn't consider that the locking lug also keeps the barrel from turning from side to side, untill the bolt stop pin is engaged in the rear.
As you can imagine, .020" translates into several degrees of rotation, but it seems fine once the bolt pin is engaged.
So, is this a big deal? and don't chastise me for what I did, as I have cussed myself out for two days straight now, and you couldn't be as hard on me as I have been on myself.
Also, not to point any blame, but the detail finish of the rough edges on this 375.00 gun was marginal at best, looked like a rush job on the whole gun, even to the point there was a deburing tool mark from the factory right across the top of the barrel, but hidden when the scope rails where mounted, so I bought it any way, but again, hindsight would have made me be a much more critical shopper of Rugers goods.
Thanks for any comments,
Lance
