Did a boneheaded thing this afternoon....

Was out blasting with my Glock 42 and one of my AR's this afternoon, and scrounged my brass afterwards as usual. Pistol brass goes into the empty coffee can it came in. I had four 42 mags with me, left one in the gun and threw the other three in the coffee can with the brass and went home.

Got home, and walked into a CF of company, and hurriedly put everything away, and then dumped the can into the tumbler and fired it up as I went back upstairs. Things settled down a couple of hours latter, and I went to clean the guns, and wondered where those mags were. Yup, two hours or so in the tumbler with the brass. Ran down and there they were.

All three were packed tight (and I mean packed tight!) with crushed walnut shell. Followers wouldnt budge, nor would the buttons in the base plate. Shook the crap out of them, figuring they must have gone in the witness holes, they should come back out that way, but no joy. Ended up having to drill the base plates and shake them out enough to get the tool in and pull the plates off. They seem to be OK, but will still have to see. In all the years Ive been shooting and reloading, this is a first. Wont be doing that again! :)

Besides the problem has been corrected. When i do that to my G 42 mags ( i have done stranger things) perhaps i will try compressed air.

All's well that ends well and maybe look at it this way...

That's one of the goofiest mistakes I've heard of.

In a whole year I'll bet that's the goofiest thing you'll ever do and you got it out of the way in July so smooth sailing for the rest of the year.

Good luck.

That's pretty good but I might be able one up you there.

Went to a winter machine shoot and brought a couple ammo cans with me.
Tossed a bunch of snow covered wet brass into one of the empty ammo cans figuring I'd clean it up later. Got in a hurry and threw 4 AK mags in the same can.

Left to work overseas, moved houses, 3 years later sorting through my ammo can stack - popped open that ammo can to find rusted AK mags, and corroded brass, swimming in a brackish pool of water.

Hadnt considered that. Might have done it. The only way can see the media getting there was through the witness holes, but it didnt seem to want to come out that way.

I hope, but theres still plenty of time. :)

Ive actually done that too, and not just once. No mags though, just brass. Nasty stuff when you open that can later too.

That one is quite bone-headed, it's actually hard to see how you could dump the contents and not notice three mags!

Now you have me thinking about what kind of similar antics I have pulled. I may be back to post, lemme think!

I was thinking the same thing at the time. Combination of being in a rush, and not paying attention I guess. The more I thought about it, the more I can see how it happened.

The 42's mags arent that big, and were on top of 200 pieces of brass in the can. When they went in, they went in first and were then on the bottom with the brass on top. The tumbler was already running, and gobbled everything up.

Live and learn. :)

Look at it this way, of all the potential firearms related mishaps, at least it was just an embarrassing timewaster and not something scary or tragic! Thanks for sharing. :)

I have fired 40S&W in a 45ACP I don't own a 40 anymore just 9mm and 45ACP. I figured i would have to be really dumb to mistake 9mm for 45ACP.....:)

A buddy of mine was having a frustrating session attempting to sight in an AR when he had finally reached his boiling point; packed up his stuff and drove out, utterly frustrated. He got home (55mi away) and then called a buddy that lived closer to the range to ask him to *gulp* grab the rifle that he forgot and left behind.

Oh, I'm like partially responsible for something stupid a different buddy did...
This was back in around '08 when the AWB was still fresh from sunsetting. He had a very expensive HK USP-45 and as I was examining his mag, I could see that it was a 10rd limit ban era mag. So I showed him the extra room in there that was being limited and he proceeds to snap the two clips from the plastic baseplate clean off -- he thought they were holding the follower from allowing more than 10. Basically, he just wrecked his (expensive) magazine right in front of me. We had to laugh at it.

went shooting with a buddy of mine recently. he had a rossi single shot 20 gauge. i had a baikal 20 gauge that i sold to his dad. he still lives with his parents (we are both 18 barely out of highschool). so anyway we get to the range and he pulls the baikal out of his case. i asked him "i thought you had your own 20 gauge?" he says "yeah, i did. my mother lost it"

how the heck do you lose a gun?
