I have to confirm that Unreal Tournament beats Quake3, hands down. I love assault.
There's a lot more to UT than just deathmatch. Assault and Domination require decent teamwork and you're forced to play them, unlike Q3, as a part of your Tournament career.
I downloaded a few new maps and a couple of mods that keep it interesting. One mod has you using weapons that resemble real ones, like the MP5 and AR-15, that do appropriate damage and require reloading. It adds another twist to the game.
I installed a mod for Q3 called Weapons of Destruction or something that's quite a bit of fun. It makes the rocket launcher shoot at about the same rate as the one from Q2, the rail gun and BFG shoot about as fast as the machinegun, the machinegun shoots as fast as the chaingun from Q2, and it adds a grenade launcher to the mix. Overall, Q3 was good looking, but I didn't like the play much.
Soldier of Fortune is pretty poor as FPS games go (played it 4 times all the way through). I saw lots of texture cracking, bad environmental effects, rotten enemy intelligence, and a few other things that shouldn't have made its way into the game. The violence is cool at first, but when the novelty wears off, you're left with a mediocre game. On the other hand, multiplayer is very good, I like being able to fling grenades without having to switch weapons.
I've been playing a lot of Motorcross Madness 2 and EA Sports' Superbike 2000. The graphics for SBK 2000 are pretty awesome and inspired me to take up riding (CBR 900RR). The controls can be varied from full simulation to almost arcade mode and nearly anywhere inbetween. I'm ranked around 1500 in the MM2 standings, though I've played online only about 8 times. It's fun, but can be frustrating at times (like dropping from 1st to last in the final lap).
I understand Id is going to do another Doom game as well as another Castle Wolfenstein (yahoo!). I remember playing the original Castle Wolfenstein on an Apple II plus, with 48kb of memory (yes, kb not mb), using paddles instead of a joystick (made a 1 player game require a team of 2).
