Detective Special question

Hi folks, I've just picked up an old Colt Detective Special in very nice condition this evening, the one with the exposed ejector. I was wondering if any of you might be able to pinpoint the approximate year of manufacture. The S/N 882,2XX. Thanks.

My DS is serial # 889,XXX and was mfg. in '62.
This is a close as I can advise but I'm sure someone here will come along that can tell you exactly when your was mfg. ;)

both of the above guns were made in 1965.

Interesting, I was informed here, shortly after I got the gun, by one of the "local experts", that mine was made in '62 according to his reference material.
Anyway, it's one of the better DS revolvers that Colt made. :D

Thanks for the info. It's my second DS, but my other one is more current, having the ejector shroud and an equally nice trigger. I was thinking of the movie "L.A. Confidential" when I was getting it yesterday.

I checked again, and according to Wilson the Police Positive Special and the Detective Specials shared serial numbers with the first gun made in 1965 being 861,500 and the last one being 890,799. Both of the guns mentioned in this thread fall within that range.

The 1966 models started with 890,800 and during this year the gun was redesigned and the letter D was added as a prefix. Th new model started with number D900101 meaning 200 old models were made in 1966 before the revamped design started production.
