A friend of mine is in the Army National Guard. He gets to play with all the cool toys, and I asked what he thought about the M9. Not favorable, but that's a different discussion.

He did mention firing the Desert Eagle 50AE. After sitting there a few seconds waiting for the "gotcha!", turns out he's serious. Apparently they are available to anyone that wants to carry it, but they get snapped up by specialized units first and the regular dudes don't get them.

So what's the deal with this? Knowing him he's not one to pull a fast one on me.

as weight conscious as people in special forces are, why would they carry around such a heavy secondary arm that rarely gets any use? My BS meter is going off on such a thought.

I'm calling crap as well. Even if they were around, the cool toys don't make it down to the National Guard.

Any chance he mistook an H&K Mk 23 for a Desert Eagle? That's still a stretch, but at least slightly within the realm of possibility.

Well there is the idea the military uses deags from video games but its not authorized to anyone, its too heavy and not nearly reliable enough for military use.

I doubt it. Desert Eagles aren't really known for being the most reliable handguns in the world (this is because they were designed as a sporting arm rather than a combat one) and I'd think that any soldier, special forces in particular, would want the absolute most reliable handgun they could get.
