Desert Eagle .357 Magnum

A friend of mine bought one last week and we went to the range yesterday to check it out. Not a gun I would buy, but he has big hands and thought it would be a hoot.

He bought the gun used (slightly), and the owner's manual recomends shooting 158gr. ammo. He took some Winchester 158gr. to shoot, and I threw some Winchester white box 110gr. into my range bag thinking he would not bring enough ammo along.:)

We started shooting it, using three different mags, and had quite a few extraction failures. The extractor kept letting go of the empty casing before reaching the ejector, resulting in the incoming round re-chambering the spent casing.

When we switched to my ammo, it functioned flawlessly. The 110gr. ammo is not as robust, judging by the reduced recoil and the distinct lack of a fire ball compared to the 158gr. ammo.

The other thing I noticed was the ejection pattern. The hot loads were slinging the empties at one to three o'clock with an occasional stove pipe. The 110gr. was throwing them further at five o'clock very consistantly.

Either the extractor claw spring is weak, or the 158gr. ammo is causing the slide to move too fast. My guess is too fast.

Any similar experiences out there?
