Jackson Co. deputy failed to follow protocol
by The Associated Press

JEFFERSON - The Jackson County sheriff says a deputy shot with his own gun during an escape attempt at the county courthouse did not follow protocol when he left his gun in a van used to transport inmates.

Deputy Kimsey Gray was shot three times yesteray when 28-year-old Timothy Lemar Jones grabbed his gun and attempted to flee in the van. Deputies responding to a call for help from Gray shot Jones, who died early today at Athens Regional Medical Center. Gray remains in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Sheriff Stan Evans said Gray was supposed to put his gun in a lockbox in the courthouse's secure port because firearms are not allowed in the building. Instead, the gun was left in the van that Gray used to drive four inmates from the county jail to the courthouse.

The shooting occurred later when Jones was being put back in the van for his return to jail after his arraignment on an armed robbery charge. Evans says that after shooting Gray, Jones took his keys and drove the van, which held three other inmates, out of the secure port underneath the courthouse.

After Jones was shot, the van crashed into a chainlink fence just outside the courthouse.

That didn't say whether the inmates were caught, but I certainly hope the shooter faces the justice he deserves.

It is a shame this happened, but dealing with dangerous criminals is like dealing with dangerous substances. You follow the safety procedures even though it is inconvenient for the safety of yourself and everyone.
There is no excuse for what the criminals did, but it is also very foreseeable that a criminal would be desperate enough to try to escape one day and that a gun would be very appealing to him.
Looks like no innocent bystanders or other officers were hurt, which is good. Nobody else should have to pay for that mistake.

The inmate was shot and killed. The real surprise is that Jackson Co. is only 30 or 40 miles from Atlanta, where the inmate disarmed a guard and killed a judge a year or so ago.:(

You were expecting people, maybe, were gonna actually learn from that fiasco??

Shouldn't matter whether it was 40 miles or 4000 miles away. Everyone should have learned to take greater care after that.

My mistake. Gray was shot three times but is in stable condition.
So he paid a price for his stupidity, but fortunately not the ultimate one. Maybe he learned something. Maybe not.
