Dennis Miller as a Monday Night Football announcer?!?

Here's some background on Miller from L. Brent Bozell III:

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>--Comedian Dennis Miller, who called himself a "conservative libertarian" in a 1996 interview, has demonstrated again that he hasn't a clue about the meaning of either term.

However Miller identifies himself, his strongest invective is always aimed at the right. After the Republicans took Congress in 1994, his attacks on Newt Gingrich were breathtakingly vicious. Even though Gingrich isn't the inviting target he was a couple of years ago, Miller isn't short of conservative whipping boys. Discussing Trent Lott's remarks on homosexuality on the June 19 edition of his weekly HBO half-hour, "Dennis Miller Live," he snarled, "Maybe we shouldn't come down on Trent just because he believes the only thing a man should have up his [rear end] is his own head," and labeled him a "stiff-haired, pinhead scumbag."

OK, maybe Miller's not a social conservative. Maybe he's a true-blue, albeit nasty and foul-mouthed, libertarian. But listen to something else he said on the very same episode: "When it comes to paranoia, most folks [are more concerned with] the federal government... but I'm made more paranoid by corporations. Car companies that lie about their safety records; chemical firms selling toxic weed killers that wind up in our food... Let's face it, the idiots in Washington, D.C. can't even investigate a conspiracy, much less create one."

This professed libertarian who fears the private sector more than the public sector is a walking contradiction in terms, and Miller would do well to remove himself from the political conversation in order to spend some quality time, say, learning. He might discover that totalitarian countries such as the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, China, and Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge have caused the deaths of countless millions, a record that couldn't be matched or even approached by big business in Hollywood's wildest fantasies.

On July 10th, Miller went after Rush Limbaugh, whose show, he claims, "barely educates [and] reinforces the narrow-minded prejudices of both the host and the listener." Unlike, we are meant to gather, "Dennis Miller Live."[/quote]

I don't want to get on a rant here but......Very few comics will pass up the opportunity to get a laugh . No matter who is the butt of the joke . Since it is such a fierce business there are almost no forbidden zones . The Pope to a homeless guy and all in the middle . Last night Jay Leno made light of the fires started by rioting "fans." Miller would stay safe if he found enough material there . BUT!! when pickin's get slim it's "Yo' Momma this and yo' Momma that ."

I decided to quit listening to the guy when I heard a comedy skit today in which he said he'd like to take some "white-out" to the second ammendment. He may have been joking, but to me it's too late.

The last time I saw Miller was about two years ago. He spent about 20 minutes bashing gun owners and the sencond amendment. I haven't watched him since.

What SK said! I know it has been more than two years for me.

Check out the Drudge Report to see how he has attacked Rush - one of our most passionate protectors of our Second Admendment.
Dennis Miller is absolute scum, bar none.

Going to be hard to listen to RUSH LIMBAUGH now. He's been lobbyinbg for that position for 4 months.....AND he knows what he's talking about re: football.....also politics, but I won't go there on this forum

I'd e-mail ABC and tell 'em I not going to watch but they'd probably know I was lying. I have no problem missing Rosie O'Doughnut but I gotta have my Monday night football fix!

ABC fires Boomer Esaisen, a nice calm, moral caring father type guy, and replaces him with a fowl, unfunny, elitist.
What's up with that?
Maybe ABC is trying to kill off the show.

I had never even HEARD of Dennis Miller - my first reaction was "Who the heck is he?!"

I played freshman (high school) football with Dan Fouts when he was still at Marin Catholic and before he transferred to St. Ignatious in his junior year.

Even back then, he was VERY good. I was not. :)

Dennis Miller is smarmy, sophmoric, and not at all funny, IMO. I won't watch him.
but then again, I sold my tv on a yard sale 5 years ago, so not watching him is easy.
Rush would have done a great job and I don't think politics would have been injected into it at all. but the Leftists control the major media and entertainment, and he was never considered.

I think the producers just over-estimated the negative backlash. I also think Rush might have made a good announcer, but it's not a forgone conclusion. His radio success is a ten(?) year fluke, you know.

The major networks believe their own polls and act accordingly. They fulfill their own prophesies, so to speak. To an extent we aid them in our deception. I believe that as long as so many of us stare in stunned belief, day after day, at the tube, a high percentage of their programming "blunders" will be defined as successful. After all, we are watching. Even if you sit there and say, "What a stupid show!", if you don't turn it off or at least change channels, it is a success by their measures.

As for Dennis Miller, what a juvenile, sarcastic, little sh!t. I have never liked the type of "humor" that is a rail against a group or an individual. It is at the expense of someone else. It doesn't work unless you dislike the target of the joke. I don't believe he could stand to be laughed at. It's strange, but I feel uncomfortable and embarrassed with his style. Don't know exactly why that is.

Sensop...
You feel uncomfortable with his style because its immature, low-brow and uncivilized. Most of us outgrew that style back in grade school....unmercifully making fun of the fat kid, the kid with glasses, the kids with some vulnerable target.

I read Drudge's ditty on this and couldn't understand why Miller would go off on Rush that way. Miller won the spot, Rush hadn't said anything negative about him. Miller is a two-bit punk. Betcha he won't last the year

I think the selection of Miller for the gig is just one more example of the cultural divide that exists in America today. ABC wants rating points for MNF; so they do it by hiring someone that appeals to fringe elements. In other words they want to broaden their appeal in a very narrow segment of the population. ABC has one of two problems: 1)they don't see how far to the left Miller is, or 2) they see how far to the left he is and think there are lots of views out there also. Either analysis looks foggy to me.

My prediction? MNF ratings will stay constant or decline. Rush will be brought in for a guest gig for a couple shows. Miller will crater before the end of the season.

Part of this was for ratings. MNF was getting killed by wrestling in that all important demographic of 13 to 35 year old males. This is an attempt to bring some of that group back into the fold. I dont watch MNF unless Dallas is playing or they have a REAL good matchup. When Dallas plays I turn the TV down and listen to the local radio guys anyway. I could care less who is in the booth.

Dennis Miller is a rabid anti-gun person. And therefore makes me gag!!

I've heard from his own mouth, via television, that he thinks guns are are a terrible evil thing, and should be removed from society.
So, for me, he's made his choice already, and went to bed with my enemies, for his career. That makes him a PC, Hollywood mouthpiece, with a script to read.

Best Regards,
Don

From the Drudge Report ( http://www.drudgereport.com/mat272.htm ):

"Limbaugh articulates the blindingly white anger of every short-sleeved Wal-mart assistant manager in America who's outraged because a black kid called him by his first name," Miller declares in a book released last week.

Huh? Any W-M ass't managers out there? Are you mad about being called by your given name? No? Oh. I guess the esteemed Mr. Miller doesn't realize that most of us don't shop at Nieman-Marcus or on Rodeo Drive (where I'm sure everyone is, in fact, addressed by Mr. or Mrs or Ms.). As a matter of fact, I'd guess quite a few more people shop (and work) at Wal-Mart than will ever buy his book. But then, we're just the "little people" who couldn't possibly understand the breadth and depth of his knowledge.

For his part, Limbaugh took the high road on his Friday radio program.

"There's not a whole lot to say," Limbaugh announced. "There are no sour grapes. I love the program, I wish them the best."

Yep, sure sounds like "blindingly white anger" to me...

Up until today, Miller wasn't even a blip on my radar screen. Henceforth I will treat him as a hazard to navigation and go out of my way to avoid him.
