Democrats who are pro-RKBA

Dennis, I can understand your opposition to some of the elements of the Republican Party.
I was a Democrat back in the days of Hubert Humphrey who was, if I recall, a solid supporter of the 2nd. But times have changed, and the Dem's have changed very much.

I'm about $150,000 shy of your income threshold, and a bit to the left of your definition of the party on social issues. But the number one reason I vote Republican is RKBA, although I keep my eyes wide open and check the candidates out thoroughly on that issue.

Anecdottally, in my neighborhood the most bigoted people are Democrats. When my wife or I ask them not to use the "n" word in our presence, they'll say, "but you're a Republican." To which I'll say, "yes, but I'm not a Nazi."

Having said all that, please tell me you won't allow Gore to be elected. Please?

Dick

Another advantage of voting republican (even for Giuliani who isn't pro-second) is that a repub. majority will will get committee leaders who can sabotage lousy bills, like Hatch does/should be doing/at least does more often than someone like his dem. counterpart would do.

Some people say they support taxing others by threat of force to pay for socialist medicine or something; but think about it. . . . if you can't own your own property, how can you own a gun?

This is just about RKBA political realities right? :)

Searched GUN CONTROL on 3 sites:

1. www.democrats.org/index.html Bul.7/13/99 GW choses gun lobby "The Democratic Party is fighting for tougher gun safety measures to
protect America's families from gun violence. In May, Democrats pushed
through the Senate a juvenile justice bill that would have closed gun show
loopholes in existing gun safety laws."
2. www.rnc.org Senate votes to protect US from nuclear threat (oct. 14, 99). Now that's gun control.
3. www.lp.org/ Release-981203 Abolish the instant check gun system before innocent americans are killed. This registered republican may be falling in love again :)

Monkeyleg, speaking for myself but understanding that Dennis and I agreed on this point, I think what was being said in the previous thread was that I (we) preferred to stay Democratic because I (we) dislike many things about Republican leadership. That doesn't mean I (we) only vote Democratic.

Speaking strictly for myself, I have voted for more than a few Republicans in the last few years and I wouldn't vote for Al Gore if a gun was held to my head. I feel exactly the same way about Pat Buchanan. George Bush, I can deal with. Gary Hart I could deal with.

The world is a very strange place. Its not black and white. You don't *have* to be on one side of a highly polarized fence or the other. Its perfectly possible and sane, as Dennis and I prove, to be a Democrat who is a strong supporter of RKBA (not to mention the entire Bill of Rights). I personally believe the Bill Clinton represents only the people who are currently in control of the Democratic party. They do *not* respresent the average Democrat on the street. I think this will become obvious in November as Al Gore loses decisively.

Virgil Goode (I-VA), a former Democrat, recently declared himself an Independent in the House of Representatives. Of Virginia's 2 senators and 11 representatives (6 R's, 4 D's, and 1 I), he is BY FAR the most pro-RKBA, and was even when he was a Democrat. I would certainly vote for him if I lived in his district, and would have even when he was a Democrat.

And there are more than a few Democrats like him who represent rural southern areas who are decidedly pro-RKBA. Can't think of any outside the southern U.S. off the top of my head, though.

Monkeyleg,

Ummm. Which Dennis? I must assume you don't mean me because I consider the Democrat Party to be our National Socialist Party.

The Republicans are merely their eager auxiliary.

Is that offensive? Well, look at the gun rights we have lost since Prohibition. The Democrats want to kill gun ownership quickly. The Republicans want to boil us frogs slowly.

Either way, either party will ensure Americans eventually are totally disarmed.

I'm through voting for gun control.

Either you believe in the Second Amendment or you don't.
Stick it to 'em! RKBA!

No Dennis, It's ME (the OTHER Dennis).

Personally, I wouldn't vote for Algore if it was a ONE MAN RACE!

Yes, I find certain aspects of the Repubs intolerable to me, As I outlined on the other thread. BUT, today's Democratic party should be renamed the American Socialist Party.

I'll probably stay registered Dem, but I vote Repub the majority of the time. BUT, today's Republican party should be renamed the American Pussy on RKBA Party. They are USELESS POND SCUM, eager to impress the Dem's with how much gun control THEY can legislate.

I have HAD IT! I'll vote for Bush JUST to keep the head socialist out of power, but I DESPERATELY want to vote Libertarian. I'm sure that I will, starting in the 2002 elections.

Neither party bears any resemblance to their counterparts of 20-30 years ago. They are BOTH socialist/communist/fascist.

I cannot, in good conscience, vote for persons in EITHER party, if truth be known.

Time to start over....

Dennis Olson, both parties have been taken over by groups the other party calls "extreme." The Republicans have the conservative Christians and the right-to-lifers. The Democrats have the gay rights movements, the pro-choicers, the environmentalists, and the gun grabbers. Maybe you're right about the Libertarian Party, but it's going to take a sea change in public opinion and the media to get them into the process on a meaningful scale. The true conservatives in the Republian Party give me hope for our Constitution. Most of the other Republicans just give me gas.

God give me the strength to change what I can change, the patience to accept what I cannot change, and the wisdom to be able to tell the difference between the two.

In my district, I have a Democratic assemblyman who is Pro gun, A+ rated by NRA. I have voted for him even though I cannot stand the Democrats. In NY a candidate can be cross endorsed and run on several lines at once, all of the votes on each party line are counted to get his vote total. I have not voted on the Republican line in over ten years, always placing my vote on the Conservative, Independent or even the Liberal party line! I believe NY is the only state that allows this.

At the last Right to carry conference here on Long Island the only candidates to come and support the NRA were two Democrats!

At the demonstration I attended last Sunday supporting KMart selling firearms the only party to show up was the Libertarian party, now if they get some candidates locally I will vote for them.

The Republican party in NY is worthless, a bunch of Pu$$y Whipped Invertebrates.

The Democrats are an unspeakable abomination!

One reason to vote in the next Presidential election.

It's the Supreme Court, Stupid!

The real problem is that the political "center" has been thrust to the left, and significantly so. Look at what is considered a "moderate" position today, and compare that to the history of the country. You will find, with almost no exceptions, that we are far more liberal-leaning today than we ever have been as a nation.

That is NOT a good thing.

I'm a wee bit tired of the implication that Republicans don't get elected because of Libertarians. I don't know about anyone else, but I came over from the Democrats.

We need both major political parties to agree that a full Bill of Rights is the heritage and true treasure of all American Citizens. That is the basic politcal touchstone that allows us to participate in a democratic political process.

I don't believe that the political "Middle" has been thrust to the left as much as I believe that the Clintonistas have worked hard to redefine what "The Middle" is. Its an old trick... just talk loudly enough and long enough about any lie and people will begin to believe it. This deception is compounded by the complete acceptance by the Press of *anything* the Democrats say as the gospel truth.

Except for some hot button issues like gun-
control and abortion I believe the political
center has actually moved to the right. 20
years ago you would not have had Democrats
crowing about welfare reform and balanced
budgets (whatever the reality). Though a
staunch Republican in 1994 I voted for a
Democrat for Congress, Jolene Unsoeld. She
was very liberal in many respects but adamantly opposed to the "assault" weapons
ban, honestly and openly saying it was ridiculous and meaningless and unconstitutional. This cost her alot of support from liberal Democrats (my liberal
brother removed his Unsoeld yard sign) who
had no comprehension of the issue anyway.
Not many Democrats would have the nerve
to make a stand like that today. Clinton has
so poisoned the well of popular perception
that to say you have a semi-automatic rifle
is paramount to being a child killer in the
minds of some. There is a very real difference between Democrats and Republican
politicians these days. Republicans may some-
times waffle on the issues to help ensure
their political survival, but Democrat politicians flat out lie, exploiting the
ignorance of the gullible. Bear in mind that
most of the gullible are actually well-meaning and given an intelligent presentation
of the facts often see the RKBA light. Don't
write people off because they're misinformed.
Educate with patience and intelligence. Set
an example of real responsible gun ownership.
And remember that undoing the damage Clinton
has done will be a process that may take time. So don't waste your vote on fringe parties. When Republicans are secure in their
power they will be less afraid to be openly
pro-RKBA.
I have a liberal friend, an enviromentalist, a graduate of Evergreen State College (Washington State's premier
liberal school), married to a sociology
professor. He owns one gun, a Rumanian AK.
When he bought that, I knew there's hope
for the Second Amendment
