Democrat Victory......Or Not?

Even though many races nationwide were won by Dems. It dosen't really reflect the nation's true ideals. Many state proposals went to the conservative side. Issues like designating an official language, abortion, affirmitave action, raising minimum wage, gay marriage, legalization of weed, school funding, etc. The Reps hurt themselves. The Iraq war is a mess, they spend money like it's free, and won't enforce border security. It's not so much that the people want Democrats....they just want change. I hope the Republicans can get it together before 2008.

Here's a list of proposals: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/ballot.measures/

America has spoken loud and clear, the republican party (like Rumsfeld) is history! It was a LANDSLIDE victory for the Dems.Just wait 'till 2008!!!

No notification on abortion and raising minimum wage are not conservative measures. Limiting affirmative action and school funding are pretty much non-partisan.

I was honestly shocked that minimum wage got raised in most places. Seems most people don't understand the negative economical impact of paying completely unskilled workers more money. I started working full time at age 15 and have never in my life made minimum. And as tipped employees are concerned, they pretty much consider their hourly wage a non-issue. My sister has been a waitress for 9 years (currently at CSU for PhD in microbiology) and has never recieved an actual paycheck (though she grosses ~$25,000 annually working an average of 24 hours a week).

Increasing minimum wage only serves to make hourly employees even lazier. And I'll apologize now for what I'm sure will offend people, but hourly employees are generally the worst workers. People who are paid on commission/flatrate/piecework/salary, etc. are much more motivated to perform their job as efficiently as possible; No milking the clock and screw-up 's cost you time that you aren't compensated for.

OK, rant off.

This is not a landslide victory for Democrats, and may very well hurt them and their chances of getting the executive branch in 2008. If things do not turn around dramatically in two years-primarily in Iraq, the Democrats will actually have to share the blame with the Republicans.

Right, there is most definitely a difference between being a landslide and being a simple victory. The DEMs only gained a few seat, enough to switch control of the House make things close on the Senate, but things were actually fairly close to start with such that small numbers made a difference.

Steve's comment was equally naive as noted by 10 Mickey Mouse,

In listening to some of the victory speeches, there were DEMs (as REPs have done as well in the past) proclaiming how America has spoken and America is demanding a change. Considering that each seat in the House was a particular geographical area, what you have is changes in just a few geographical areas that were enough to sway the majority. Attributing changes in just a few areas to represent all of America is about like saying Florida was the determining factor in the Bush election. Florida really wasn't. It was just the last to get its act together and finally determine just how many votes were cast for each candidate.

Any way you cut it, it was something of a mixed box of chocolates. Losing the House is most definitely reason for concern, but as noted, it didn't take much to lose the house.

affirmative on that, I doubt the Democrats will do anything while Bush is in power, just make people loose faith in both parties. I khave to think the next pres. election will be a close one but will go to a Democrat anyways. Calling it the way I see it...

Landslide my butt. The Democrats now have razor-thin margins. Hell, one anoying comment to Joe Lieberman and they don't even have the senate. We can easily reverse this in 08 if we keep our wits.

Listenning to the right explain how this was not a major win for the left is like listenning to the BLack Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail proclaim he only has a flesh wound as limbs are knocked off.

This was a ONE ISSUE election. Iraq. The right is tied to the status quo and the left, while not havin an answer, is not the right that got us to the status quo and insists it is actually a good position.

Abortion, 2A, Gay Marriage, and just about every issue is nothing to the vast majority of Americans in the center when compared to a daily body count out of Iraq with no plan or end in sight. The right needs to look in the mirror and realize they will continue to be rejected until they stop handling the Iraq issue as a "Public Realtions" problem and address the real issue which is America does not want to be there any longer.

Sadly the 2A issue we all hold so dear is tied to the right in most cases and as the right looses power those who oppose the 2A gain power. They may not have taken power on a 2A issue but you can be certain they are going to want to push their agendas while they have the power to do so.

it was a Republican defeat more than a Democratic victory...
compare the turnover numbers to other second term presidencies...

conservatism is alive and well...
look at the marriage, tax, and eminent domain ballot initiatives that won...
