New Dem ad: 'Ain't nobody gonna take' my guns away

by John Brandt | October 16, 2012

...

In the commercial, the Georgia congressman shows off a pistol his grandfather used "to stop a lynching" and a rifle his father had "just to keep us safe." The commercial ends with Barrow closing the bolt on the rifle and saying that he approves this message because "these are my guns now, and ain't nobody gonna take them away."

A lot of post on TFL get closed because they are too political, but I feel this is a good post because it specifically points to an ally of our sport. I do not know anything else about this Congressman but he might deserve our support.

They don't need to "take them away". They will make just it so expensive to own and feed ammo to that you'll voluntarily sell it.

I've met John Barrow. He has actually been somewhat active in promoting 2nd Amendment causes in Georgia, as opposed to simply giving enough lip-service to get an endorsement. Now if he'd just do something about that Carl Sagan hair... ;)

If we get into broad left/right debates, this one will be closed as well. However, it's good to point out that the cause of the 2nd Amendment crosses political lines more than many folks might think.

I don't know if I would call it a litmus test or not, but it is interesting to look at a canidate, such as Congressman Barrow, who is a pro-2A and a Democrat and ask if yourself if you value your firearms rights enough to be a single issue voter.

I did early voting and couldn't reconcile myself to do that.

The Second Amendment is the cement that holds the rest of the Constitution together.

There are absolutely pro-2A Democrats, particularly in the South.
Not just in the South. If we go back to the 2006 landslide in Congress, look at many of the Democratic freshmen who took seats. You'll see that many of them had high ratings from the NRA. In fact, some of them had better ratings than the Republicans they replaced.

On the flip-side, I have a long memory. I remember who voted for what back when. Red doesn't always stand for 2A support.

Yes. When it comes to guns, I am a single issue voter. Support guns, you have my attention. Support getting rid of the CLEO sign-off requirement for NFA transfers, I'll vote for you......even if you are a Democrat.

A lot of P.C. Kumbaya once again. Barrow gets a "C" rating from the GOA. Virtually all good gun laws come from the Red States and virtually all bad gun laws come from blue states. Let's be real and not play pretend again. The NRA ratings/endorsements are a joke. To support an incumbent Senate candidate that voted for Kagan and Sotomayor is idiotic. I know Barrow is from Georgia's 12th house district and he has to pretend he is down with the cause.

Even if I trample all over other liberties and kick puppies? Really cute puppies?

The NRA ratings are actually taken quite seriously by politicians, and by many voters. GOA? Dunno. I've spoken to several politicians, both pro and anti, and the GOA simply isn't a factor.

I agree, the GOA is not a "factor," but their rating are "real" and Obama and the majority of the democrat party could care less about the NRA, and in fact views the NRA as the enemy. Outside of the South, in blue states, publicly stating that you are against the NRA and all it stands for is a big plus. I've posted the scientific polling (Pew Research), and you-all were nice enough to fix the format, and we all know what the facts are, outside of the Red States, the NRA is viewed, again, as the enemy. And their ratings, while I agree are far more influential, are flawed to say the least and lead to bad endorsements which have the direct result of getting more Kagans and Sotomayors. These same great Blue State rock solid NRA endorsed politicians vote in lock-step with their brethren for anti-gun justices. This P.C. nonsense is the circular firing squad I see so often. NRA great guy and endorsee Harry Reid is exhibit "A" - 8-13-10 article from examiner.com by Anthony Martin:

"Advocates for keeping Harry Reid, D-Nevada, in the U.S. Senate based upon the flaws of his opponent, Republican Sharron Angle, are hard-pressed to defend the Senate majority leader over his rather frequent unintelligible gibberish.

The latest example is Reid's defense of his vote in favor of Leftwing extremist Elena Kagan for the U.S. Supreme Court.

Reid claims his vote for Kagan was 'out of concern for the Second Amendment.'

The outrageous nature of such a claim is evidenced by the fact that Kagan is on record stating she has 'no sympathy' for those who support gun rights, despite her claims before the Senate Judiciary Committee that she respects the 2 recent major Court decisions affirming the citizens' right to own, possess, and use handguns in self-defense."

Yes. The second amendment is the most important amendment in the Constitution. If we ever lose that one, all of that other fancy writing on 230 year old paper will be as meaningful as the British Stamp Act of 1765 is to us today.

It doesn't suprise me that Rep. Barrow got an A from the NRA and a C from the GOA. It's lik the kid in high school that got an A in PE but a C in Civics, what's really matters the most?

I have read here over and over again that a new AWB can't be pushed through Congress. And I also highly doubt, that Rep. Barrow is going to push to repeal the Hughes Amendment, the Import Ban, or the Gun Control Act of 1968. That being said, I found myself duty bound to vote for the other fellow.

Obama and the majority of the democrat party could care less about the NRA, and in fact views the NRA as the enemy.

the same way that the NRA and its members view the Dems as the enemy. you're not going to win any brownie points by alienating and demonizing other non-conservative gun owners.
