Defensive shotgun mods

Purchased an 870 Express a few days ago, figured it'd be a great base for a project gun. Ordered so far:

Callahan Aluminum Magazine Follower
Remington all Aluminum trigger plate assembly
Remington Machined extractor
Scattergun HD magazine tube spring

I may eventually install peep sights but am in no rush... fast acquisition with the front bead and 00 Buckshot!

I'd like to hear/see what changes you've made to your defensive shotguns!

On a side note the 870 is much simpler than my 500 for takedown/reassembly.

I have installed XS Big Dot Tritium Front Sights and a light source onto my primary fighting scatterguns for when things go bump in the night.

Try to keep it simple, tends to work better that way.

You didn't say which barrel you have or which model 870. I assume you got a short barrel and note that your mods so far are pointed at increasing reliability. I have an 870 with an 18.5" barrel and a factory two shot extension. I have a couple of fore-ejnds for it; the sporter and the police style. I use the sport model as I am using the gun for trap, but when I get a trap gun I will put the police back on. I will ten add a light and that is all.

I actually carried an 870 at work and used it in a couple of shootings. I bought mine with a short barrel and cleaned it before I carried it. That was it. Never failed me.

IMHO the best mods to a defensive shotgun are made to the nut that holds the butt. I'd suggest Louis Awerbuck, Randy Cain, Clint Smith, Tom Givens or a good local guru to provide those modifications...

I have a few things on order for a 20 gauge Remington 870 express:
  • oversized safety
  • Remington Supercell recoil pad
  • forged extractor
  • 1100 carrier spring (used by the 870 Police)
  • Elzetta mount and 3 cell light with a on off click switch reachable from the stock forend
It already has a 2 shot mag extension, so that's taken care of. I'm still looking for a big fat bead to put on the front; tritium would be nice, but not a necessity.

Once that's all in, and my wife and I practice with it, I may send it to Robar; I like the idea of their NP3+ coating on all the internals. However, it's more of a "what I'd like" rather than any requirement.

No rifle sights, no red dots, ghost, or reflex sights. No ammo carriers. No lasers. No trigger jobs. No vertical fore grips. No rails. No recoil reducing stocks. No bayonets. No grenade or harpoon launchers. The goal is a simple working boomstick.

Riggins, by 6 shot do you mean 6 in the mag plus one in the chamber? I am used to that config being called a 7 shot or 6 + 1. It sounds like you have the two round Remington factory magazine extension.
