Thoughts on the Glaser safety round?

Please provide online links for purchase if available!

TIA!

I personally do not like the Glaser due to it's lack of penetration especially if the perp is wearing heavy clothing. With the Taurus UL I would lean towards a lower recoiling round such as Federal Personal Defense or Federal Nyclad. I personally use Federal Personal Defense in mine due to Deparment restrictions, otherwise I would use the Nyclad.

Don't use the glaser, it is a junk round. :(
I use Speer Gold Dot 125gr +P in my M85 although, the recoil of this round in a UL might be a little fierce. If it is to much try Federal NyClad's.

The Taurus 85 is a great little revolver and can handle a good variety of rounds with little worry.

The Glaser safety slug is a novel design that works quite well if the target is not obscured by glass windows, sheet metal from car doors, or heavy, thick winter clothing. It's power comes from the #12 shot inside the bullet that spreads around in the wound cavity, creating several smaller sub-projectiles. The problem is that it just does not get into the body of an attacker deep enough to reach the vital organs in less than optimum shooting circumstances. Would I want to be hit with one? Hell no! Are they useless? Hell no. The problem is that your target will likely bleed out rather slowly.

My own fixed-sight revolvers in 38 caliber with snub noses are usually fed Cor-Bon 158 grain LSWCHP +P (discontinued) for carry use.

The other load I use and like in my alloy frame guns (non +P) is 3-D 125-grain JHP. A box of 50 retails in my neck of the woods for $12.75. I get good groups with it and have recovered two bullets from range sessions with decent results.

There are four types of men in this world. Know how to deal with each of them and you will prosper.
He who knows not and knows not he knows not is a fool, shun him.
He who knows and knows not he knows is asleep, awaken him.
He who knows not and knows he knows not is a child, teach him.
He who knows and knows he knows is a wise man, learn from him

I carry 125 +P's in mine. They seem to recoil a bit less than heavier rounds, though that may be just my perception.

158gr Speer JHP. Seems to me that light loads (like Federal PD 110gr) produce a lot of muzzle flash and I amnot convinced that they achieve much velocity from short barrels anyway. SOme friends prefer 158gr Nyclads for the same reason.

I carry two Mag-safes (similar to Glasers but larger shot) followed by 3 plus P 158 gr SWC-HPs. I guess I want it both ways and if I get to the 158 gr loads it will probably be because the Magsafes didn't get in deep enough. So I want the last three to be good penetrators.

I alternate every other round between 158gr Speer JHP and 125gr Triton Hi-Vel +P which are designed to work well in short barrels.

I carry Nycads in my M85ul, but the muzzle flash is pretty large. Not a good round to be shooting in the dark...

Thanks for the feedback folks! The 85 is currently my wife's gun, but she'll be moving up to a .357. I'll be carrying the Taurus when I don't feel like Glocking around.

Amazing some think a firm as large as Glaser after 25+ years of selling and R&D a product make junk. Kinda like doing a book review without reading the book. The "heavy clothing" thing is pretty lame if you think clothing stops much of anything including Glaser's. So much gun rag nonsense. The Glaser has a LONG history of working just fine and were designed for sky marshalls to use aboard in flight aircraft. Hardly a "novlety" round. You don't think they got approved on a whim do you?
Glaser was so hounded with the gun rag crap about "heavy clothing" they came out with another form of it with larger shot and blew that urban legend out the door.
They are not for every situation, but they do have thier place and having seem xrays and wound photos and one shooting where one was used it is pretty clear they do just what they should do for the job they were intended to do.
They aren't AP and they won't defeat barriers like walls etc. That is the whole idea. Also they have zip recoil greatly enhancing placement which is sure better that firing a hot load and not staying on target from recoil in a small gun.
In apartments or homes in close proximity to each other or occupied homes with thin walls(most are) the Glaser performs a valuable function. The firm is hardly starving to death and it is obvious they work when applied properly.
The owner Mr. Cannon at a Shot Show one year said much of his problem was gun rag writers that bad mouthed him when he wouldn't send them a couple of hundred rounds of each type etc., for free. He also does not advertise much in gun rags, another kiss of death for such firms.

I use Triton .38 +P.
Works good for me.

Sorry friends, Taurus gun SUCK!

I bought a Model 85CH, ported, 2"bbl and SENT IT BACK TO TAURUS THREE TIMES. It still does not function properly, either the cylinder will fail to advance or the trigger will stick back. I have given up on them fixing it! I WOULD NOT TRUST MY LIFE TO A TAURUS. I am kicking myself for not not spending the extra $100 for the S&W Model 637.

HOWEVER, this post was on ammo for a .38 Special defence load. I like the Federal Hydra-shok 110 grain (Personal Defense Load). Wal-Mart sells them for $11 per box of 20 rounds.

Remember to practice A LOT with your type of carry ammo and be sure your gun functions flawlessly with it. I have tried many types of ammo in my Taurus 85CH and still have problems. After sending it in to taurus numerous times, I don't want to deal with them anymore. Next gun = S&W!

I have had the same experience as Oleg. I used to have a S&W 60. The cylinder locked up and the gunsmith I took it to had to send it to S&W. I sold it when I got it back. I bought a Taurus 85 and it works fine. Plus I am more accurate with it. Guns are like anything else mechanical, sometimes you get a lemon.
