Defacing Body armor

A friend of mine gave me two IIIA vests and I wanted to trade one for a handgun. However inside the vests are a Serial Number and the name of my friend who the vests were made for. From the factory. What I want to know is if it's illegal to remove or black out his information and the serial number?

Marking out the name is understandable, but if you obliterate the serial number, everyone is going to assume they are stolen.

Ok I just assumed that the serial number is registered to the name. So why know out one and not the other.

I don't really see a need for either to be kept. Vests have a definite life span, and when they are no longer safe to use to protect your life, then what's the point in having that information?

Well vests have a manufacturers life span but i have seen several vests and plates well past the date still stop multiple rounds.

Yeah, and I have several I use in my indoor range for "stoppers". I still wouldn't put-on a vest that is past it's expiration date. The $5-600 for a new vest is a very small investment to protect my life...
