Deer today

I posted a new thread titled "Deer - Left Handed" under the hunting forum, if anyone is interested (with picture). Shot it with my .270 Win, Rem 700 Stainless in an HS Precision Sendero take-off stock, using 130 grain Hornady GMX bullets ahead of 60 grains of Reloder 22.

The first bullet did it's job well, but he was thrashing around, so I placed another in the boiler room to finish the job. Both bullets passed through and did a great job. I'll continue using these bullets.

Picher,congrats...it's been a tough year. I got mine in Alna, Maine with a .243using Remington core-lokt 100 gr. No time to reload this year. Nice little 4 pt. 137 lbs. He was DRT. I've been deerless for 3 years. I am amazed at how well that little 100 gr bullet performed. I'm sold on .243. Going for 'yotes now. What part of the State were you in?

Sea Buck: I'm in the Augusta/Waterville area.

I'm also very impressed with the power of the .243 Win...so much so that, after buying a used .243 Handi-Rifle for my grandkids to hunt with, and seeing what it would do on various targets, I had my .22-250 re-barreled to it.

Sighting-in the Handi-rifle with 100 grain factory rounds, I'd set my target about 15 feet in front of an angled rock wall. A bullet went through the target and hit a rock, sending pieces flying clean through the plastic signboard used as a target holder. That was very surprising, since it didn't happen with my .270, but I may not have hit the same kind of rock. Subsequent tests showed more power than I'd expected from the cartridge. Last year, a 140 lb doe shot through the heart/lung area at 130 yards appeared to be dead before it hit the ground.

We're using 85 grain Barnes TSX bullets, but wish they were a bit heavier. I've limited shots by the kids to under 200 yards and think the cartridge is very capable beyond that, but the kids probably aren't.

I'd love to hunt in the South, especially for quail and other birds, but don't think I could bring back (75 x 2=) 150 deer! ;)

Actually, I'm looking forward to hunting eastern coyotes for the next few weeks. They're almost as numerous as deer here, but we can hunt them at night, starting in December. They even come close to the house at night, sometimes even in daylight.
