deer slug questions

What distance can a good shooter use as a guideline for a reasonable shot at deer? If I miss, how far can my slug travel? I want to use a rifld. 12 or 20 gage. Which would be best?

A good 12 with a rifled barrel van easily shoot accuratly at 100 yards. I have seen groups as small as 1 1/2" out of my Ithaca Deerslayer II. Some have said they have reliably killed deer out to 200 yards, which I don't doubt, but the trajectory is getting pretty arched. You can never tell how well any gun will shoot so to have someone tell you that a certain brand will shoot tiny groups is somewhat misleading. His particular gun might, your may not. I have also found, just like rifles,, each gun has its prefferences for ammo. You will need to test several brands to see which your gun likes. I prefer a 12 for deer hunting, but I have used a 20 on many occasions and they will work fine, just not as well as the 12 in most cases.

you cant tell how far you can reliably hit a deer without taking your gun out and target shooting until you know where it hits and what you are capable of. you should know the ballistics of your slugs and the distance you can hold a group you are comfortable with.

Because it's alright to kill a deer but wrong to hurt one.I shot a doe last year that was limping through with her front shoulder completely exploded by a shot. it made me sorry for every halfassed shot I have ever made [mostly when I was younger]. nowadays I practice more and pass on more shots then ever but I take more deer then before.

we have a person in our group who cant shoot past 40 yards he knows and limits his shots. I know I can hit out to 100 and have taken deer out to 80 yards. most people cant hit past 50 but will tell you the can shoot 200 and try to shoot 300. find out for yourself and dont take shots you dont feel good about.

Here in NJ, buckshot or slug are the only way you can hunt in centerfire season.

I found in a small NH gun shop an old Mossgerg bolt action 20 ga.
I had my smith cut off the poly choke and attach a Williams peep sight with a front sight. also had the trigger smoothed, but no more than that.
That cheapo, magazine fed bolt will shoot ragged holes with Winchester rifled slugs at 100.
Nj rarely offers a shot longer than 80 yards without bramble/tree interference, so I have practiced keeping my shots grouped between 50 & 100 yards.
the 20 gauge is about the equivalent of a 1/2" of lead, or just around a .50 cal.
So far, that 20 has taken 5 deer in 3 years.
