So, a freind of my dad bumped off a deer this morning, and I get to have the skin.:D So, whats the best way to tan a hide in winter?

And what would YOU make out of a deer hide?

It would depend on what color you where going for / hair on or hair off that type of thing. Brain tanning leaves it a light color almost white. The other way leaves it a yellowish color. I would go for the darker color, but that is just me. Google is your friend, lots of info on the net, dies and such. JMO

Shirts, pants, possibles bags for muzzle loading, the list goes on and on.

I have tanned six or seven deer hides.
Take it from me, the best way to tan a hide is to send it off and let somebody else do it.
It is the nastiest, messiest work you can imagine, and it is many many hours of hard work.

Sebring Custom Tanning does good work, I just got a hide back from them yesterday. Problem is, they take 11 months to tan a hide.
As for making something, you can make a shirt or jacket, but that will take four or five deer hides.
With one hide about all you can make is a pair of gloves.

i agree with letting someone else do it. i have never tried it, but my girlfriends dad is a big hunter and ive seen him try it once:rolleyes:, not pretty. he sends them all out now. the ones that he has had done are laying over the top of his couchs under deer mounts, looks pretty cool and it only takes one.
 
FYI: I don't know what you consider expensive, but the cost seems prohibitive to me. I wouldn't hesitate to have someone tan an axis or fallow deer or another semi-exotic hide, but if I were to do a whitetail skin I'd probably try brain tanning or use one of the solutions available either from online stores or from a taxidermist.

A professionally done hide will be soft and supple. Most home done skins are stiff, but look great on a wall.

uberleather.com, that link I posted above, will tan a hide for $43.
As a guy who has tanned many by himself, paying someone else $43 is a steal.

well... I have gone with the hometanning method, I'm taking it out of the solution on sunday. I hope it truns out OK. thanks for your imput.

as for what to make out of it, I'm thinkin mountain man hat. :cool:
 
Get a copy of "FoxFire 3." Actually, buy the entire series and learn how to do just about anything.

I've seen them on the net just now from $4.89 to over $15.00. That copy (#3) is the one which is "borrowed" and not returned most often. :D

Friend of mine sent a 2-3 deer hides out to be tanned. Had a coat made with the hair left on. It was beautiful and he said it was the warmest coat he`d ever owned and almost waterproof but very heavy. I always tried to convince him to wear coat and my rattling antler and run through the woods during shotgun season:D.
