Deer Barrels sticker shock for the Winny SX3

Today I priced a deer barrel for a Whinchester SX3 and could believe the are $675.00!:eek: So I thought maybe there is a way around it. I'm wondering if there are any after market barrels or if I could shoot a rifiled slug through it using a Improved Cylinderi Choke? Does anybody have some expirence with this gun for deer hunting? Thanks in advance. Also, just to let members know I love this gun!

I found a listing for a canti rifled slug barrel w/ forearm marked down to $499.99, but that's still expensive.
 
Hi, yes have X3 in the house but only for goose hunting, have 2 other rifle that I scoped to take in area where deer hunting is allowed only with black powder or shotgun, one is a oldie 1300 model with deer slug barrel, the other one a defender. Also try a Franchi semi auto with 22.5 " barrel ( it was originally 30" barrel that I cut since ad 2 barrel 30" ventilated rib.. ) I tested the 3 out at the range and they put 3 slugs in grups from 1.5" to 2.5" at 50yds range, but ended up using B.Powder rifle after seeing the location of the territory.

You might also consider a rifled choke tube. Carlson's sells them for about $45. They allow you to shoot some sabot slugs and generally improve accuracy even with rifled slugs.

Otherwise, yes, you could shoot rifled slugs with your IC choke.
 
Most folks and shotguns can do well with a chosen slug out to 50 yards. Choose your slug by benchtesting.

The only "Bird" barrel here I shoot slugs through has a skeet choke in it when I do. It's an Express barrel trimmed down to 21" and threaded for chokes. Slug of choice does 2.5" groups at 50 yards from the bench.

Over a decade and maybe 20 deer, my average shot opp with all weapons (ML,shotgun and bow) ran about 32 yards. I failed to recover one deer.

Of course, one needs to practice.....
 
I have heard(on the internet) that SX2 will fit SX3, but I have no idea if that is true. Also thanks for the replies. I think I might just go buy a muzzle loader.
 
Don't overlook Dave's comment and experience above ....out to 50 yards you have a lot of options on slugs using your current barrel ( maybe to 100 yards ). You'll just have to test some different slugs.
 
MSRP is 699 for one version of the rifled SX3 barrel.

I just picked up an SX3 28in 12ga 3in walnut at Cabela's. IC choke sounds good to me.

With the cheapest of slugs (that is all I buy:o) I am not that tight with my 18 inch 20 gauge mossberg cylinder bore. I guess it would be 4.5-5 inch at 50 and 6-6.5 or so at 65 yards. I also don't think the majority of my personal shot opportunities exceed 30-40 yards but I want to know I can get a bit further.

Heck, beyond 45 or so, I would need binoculars to be sure I was shooting a barely florida legal buck and not a nanny or nubbin' buck... and that is with my current glasses on.:eek:

rifled lead slugs in the smooth bore.
I have a SX2 sporting clays. I priced barrels and said that wasnt gonna happen. i use the cheap rem sluggers all the time. i dont have groups to brag about but i can hit a pie plate at 100 yds. Just use the bead and get use to it.
 
Winchester makes a Power Point rifled slug that is designed to be used in a smooth bore with an improved cylinder choke. The accuracy is amazing even out of a shorter barrel like my Weatherby PA-08 TR. I can consistently hit a small paper plate at 75 yards! Check them out for $5 a box on Cabelas you cant go wrong by trying them. At the very least you can enjoy making big holes in your targets!:D
 
The VERY BEST THING TO DO is to buy an extended rifled choke tube (long as possible) from perhapes carlsons and NOT use remington sluggers or any of their cheaper slugs. The lead is so soft it creates a sheet of garbage on the barrel wall that takes about an hour to remove. I much recommed with the use of rifled or IC tubes; Winchester Super X bulk 15rnd packs (a light load, but very accurate), winchester 3" 1760fps 1oz (a bit more oomph, still very accurate), and most other rifled slugs (Federal Truball are a personal favorite too, they really shine out at longer ranges). The Winchester 3" slugs were most accurate of the slugs I've tested in my Benelli Montefeltro, shooting an inch and a half at 50 yards. My Nova pretty much likes any Federal rifled slug load, all guns are different.
