Decocking a CZ-75B safe?

I've been considering a CZ-75B military as the price is right. I want it for range use. It does not have a decocker lever as does the PCR or the CZ-75BD. Which do you folks prefer and how do you safely decock the CZ-75B with a round in the chamber?

I like the cocked-and-locked option, but I wish they had a version like the HK USP variant 1 where you have a safety and a decocker along with cocked-and-locked capability.

Thanks

Place your left index finger in front

of the hammer as you hold it with the thumb. That way, if your thumb should slip, your finger absorbs the impact. It also leaves the hammer(safely) on the half-cock notch for a shorter, lighter DA trigger pull.

I've decocked mine many many times. Use the thumb and index finger of the non shooting hand to pinch the hammer. Pull trigger just enough to let the hammer move forward. Release trigger. Now if the hammer slips the firing pin safety prevents a fire. The hammer will be decocked to half cock, which is where the decocker version of the CZ75 leaves it. It also reduces the length of the trigger pull and lightens the feel.

Anybody who use the thumb of the firing hand ... welll it's darwin theory in action if you ask me.

I wonder what the world did before the decocker was invented. My thought is you best know how to do this safley or just not even have a gun. I have seen too many people pop off a a/d doing this when they had no clue. Look at all the rifles that are made with a external hammer and not one has a decocker. Its just a cure for a lack off training or practice.

Like some others writing here, I think its all a non-issue. BUT!

Because the CZ-75B has a firing pin block, if you Lower the hammer with your thumb, and let the trigger go forward once its released the hammer, you should substantially reduce the risk of an accidental discharge: the firing pin block should keep the hammer from activating the firing pin unless the trigger is all the way to the rear.

shiroikuma has it right

That's what the holes are for in the hammer. It is a very safe gun. ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION! true for any make of gun. -ddt

It's no problem. I always decock my pistols manually, btw, revolvers too...no decocker on revolvers. I think it's more safe because I control the hammer, not some damn gizmo. I use thumb of the firing hand and I do not shake or sweat when I do this. Decocker is for dummies, sorry...

Oris, but what about when you are shaking and sweating?

Not trying to pick a fight as I admit I will sometimes use the method of decocking you use. I also respect your contributions to this forum. But... In every violent confrontation I have ever been in, I get nervous and sweaty, and I stay that way for quite some time. Maybe I'm just a wuss but I still think the method shiro and I endorse is safer and is the method demonstrated in many of the firearms manuals I own, as well as the limited training I have recieved. food for thought. -ddt

Hey, no fighting is needed. It's just that I started decocking
hammers (with use of thumb) on pistols 25 years ago and never knew another way. Actually, my instructor in Moscow shooting club introduced me to this "wrong technigue", when I started
shooting .22 Margolin, then, when I've spent some time in the Soviet Army, it was the way we were schooled to handle Makarov,
although Mak has a decocker, I can't recall us using it at that time.
I know, Russia is screwed up country, so I probably do it the wrong way...

Russians need love too!

I never got to shoot a mak but I really enjoyed my Russian tokarev and AK variants. I learned your way too but have not had the time behind the trigger that you have. Russian training methods are probably pretty damned solid techiniques or that is my impression anyways.

The country may have problems but I was told by an ex spook(he would never admit it) that if I was ever in the third world and afraid for my life that I should wear cheap suits and act Russian. He said that they have the rep for being the last people you want to mess with.

The guy that taught me how to jump from perfectly good airplanes made similar suggestions. The country may never recover from that bastard Stalin or the KGB but the weapons and soldiers still deserve respect for being very reliable. -ddt

If you want to convience everybody that you're from Russia beyond the reasonable doubt, walk into the third world country
bar and say a magic phrase, pointing at the bottle of vodka:

"Six doubles in one glass.."

Ask for a slice of pickle, drink glass of vodka bottom up and bite the pickle.

Do it at least three times in a row, and everybody will immediately
recognize you as Russian, even if you speak perfect English...

P.S. Of course, no ice, it must be straight only....
