Decisions, decisions.....

Gun season for deer starts this week in Bama! For the first hunt, I am trying to decide between:

1. The sentimental choice - my first deer rifle - old Marlin 336 30/30 given to me at 14 - recently refinished.
2. New toy - Marlin 45/70.
3. Stand-by - Winchester 70 .243

*I am hunting over a field where the longest shot will be about 100 yards so none of the rifles has a distance-of-shot advantage.

Use the 30-30, get a bolt action for longer range work later. No need for a 45-70 on deer or hogs. Way too much gun.

Winchester Model 70....

IS a bolt action. Hehe. I am leaning toward the 45/70 but sentimentality might win out. I will in all probability leave the .243 in the case until later in the season when a much larger bean-field hunt pops up.

I love the 243 but I also have a soft spot for the sentimental as well...the 45/70 would vaporize a deer so I would go with the 30-30

It depends on you hunting. You sitting/walking thru woods so thick that you can't see over 100 yards or are sitting over a picked field where you can see 400?

OP...........

Tiny greenfield...100 yards max. Looking like the new toy since I took it to the range today and put enough rounds in a 3 inch circle to impress me.
