Decisions...Decisions...

I am considering upgrading my CCW. I carry a Colt Detective Special and at times I have carried my Xdm 40. I am 6'4'' 275 lbs and the XDm 40 is just to large for me to conceal during the summer, with what I wear (shorts and t-shirts). In the winter, it isn't an issue, since I wear alot of fleece pull overs and jackets. Just looking for something to carry year round. The Detective Special has alot of sentimental value and just don't want it banged up anymore.

I have been considering SA XDsc, Glock 26,27,30, Kahr, Para Ordnance. The last gun show that I went to, I handled pretty much everything that I am considering. I really like the slimnest of the Kahr line. The SA XDsc really impresses with its capacity options. Glock, well their sub compacts felt really good in my hand, considering how big I am. I also like the bull nose slide on the subcompacts. Para, just like the feel of the Warthog. But, the one I saw at the gun show looked cheap. I hated the skeleton trigger on the ParaOrdnance. I read on here where their customer service seems to be less than stellar.

I have shot the Glock 26 and the XDsc in 9mm. Both shot great and felt great in my hand. But, I am still undecided. I haven't shot the ParaOrdnance or the Kahr. Had no luck with anyone having a Kahr or Para, not even able to rent as well.

Can you guys think of any manufacturers that I am overlooking? I would appreciate any observations, constructive criticisms and personal experiences with any of the lines that I have mentioned.

I am 6'1" 245 and I like the XD service. The little extra lenght doesn't bother me. I am tempted by the Kahrs also. Another one I would look at would be the Walther PPS (slim is in;)).

Happy shopping,

I looked at the pps too. Not in consideration though, just felt like a block in my hand. I liked the P99c from Walther, little pricey for me.

Thanks for the input.

I am not as big as you(6' 220) but I too dress casual in the summer. I have carried a lot of different guns but have settled on the Glock G26 as my main Carry gun. I have a S&W M38 Bodyguard I carry when the G26 is too big. The main thing is to get a really good holster. I have had good luck with the Crossbreed Holster. It makes the little G26 disappear.

You know how things go. Folks here will give you opinions based on what they are really high on at the time. So, here's mine. :D Right now I'm carrying an SA 4" 1911 that is easily concealable in a OWB high ride holster. Like you the winter layers give you a lot more options on what and how to carry. For the past 2 years I have carried a Bersa Thunder 380 during the summer months due primarily to size and weight. My wife has just confiscated it for herself so I picked up a Bersa 9 UC pro. Of all the pistols I've handled and shot recently, this is by far the most comfortable for me. If you haven't looked at the Bersa line for comparison, do yourself a favor and find a dealer close to you and try one out. I've been a gun owner for 30 years and this is the first time I've been this postitive on a semi auto. BTW - the Bersa compact line is available in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP.

I would guess probably that you do not have a decent belt and holster combo for your XD. You may have "expensive" ones, . . . but they are not doing the proper job for you.

My full size, all steel, 1911, with 9 rounds of 240 in it disappears under a tee shirt. I sometimes wear cut off jeans, . . . but I don't wear those sissy looking elastic band shorts. My wife and nieces wear them.

You can be cool, . . . and carry what you want if you get good leather equipment.

May God bless,
Dwight
