i visited my local pawnshop today and spotted a mil spec mossberg 590 police trade-in. Except for the finish, the shotgun is in perfect working order. It comes with speed feed pistol stock, and all for $250. My first question would be if this is a good deal or should i pass. I seem to keep comming back to this shotgun, but due to lack of income i am unable to make the purchase. However I have a winchester 1300 defender that I would be willing to trade for it. My second question is should i go ahead and trade for the 590 or should i keep the winchester. thx

I would say without a doubt the Mossburg is a MUCH better gun. IN addition, how much longer will you be able to get Winchester parts? I havent used a defender in years, but if I recall it is a one rail design, compared to the mossy which is two. IN addition, I find the ergonomics of the Mossy to be far better, in many ways ( particularly location of the safety) to be superior to an 870. I love 870's, but the mossy is as good a gun. The Winchester, in my view, is not in the same league.

If it really IS a 590A1 MilSpec and the wear on the used one you're talking about is merely cosmetic, then yes, it IS a good deal.

IIRC, the MSRP for a new one is about $598.00.
