Decent 17HMR?

Hey all, I'm about to buy my first rifle, and I've decided on something in the 17HMR caliber. My reasoning was because they are relatively accurate, and extremely cheap to shoot compared to other rifles. When I took a look at the selection of rifles, it's a pretty daunting list. Anybody have any suggestions? Looking mostly for affordability, but I also want a gun that will last me a long time.

I too love the 17hmr... that said dont make the same mistake I did and get a Remington 597 (or any other semiautomatic)

The round is a very good round for plinking.

I'll start by saying that I would highly recomend starting with a .22lr for your first rifle. While a 17HMR is an inexpensive rimfire cartridge, the .22 is still cheaper, therefore you'll likely put more rounds down range with the .22. The more range time you have, the more you will enjoy and advance in this great hobby.

We would also need more information to better help you select a rifle. What is your price range? What is your intended use? What is your level of experience?

Personally, I would start with a bolt action .22 from Savage. You will not find a more accurate .22lr out of the box in the $200-300 range. They have great triggers which aid greatly in being able to produce better groups. Their actions come bedded and barrels floated on most models which is something that NO other manufacturer in this price range does (that I'm aware of). Do some browsing on their site, try their gunfinder and see for yourself. I can personally vouch for excellent customer service as well (not that you'll need it).

I've been shooting rifles since I was 13, I'm 18 now. Everything from the .22 up to my uncles 7mm. I've actually shot quite a bit.

My price range is anything below $400. I've been checking out the site and I'm rather impressed. Cheap prices for such nice rifles. Thanks for the info!

Picked up my CZ 452 Varmint new in the box for $410, great gun for the money. Feels like a real rifle and is top of the line quality.

Savage

I went with a Savage bolt action. Love it! Very accurate, light weight and came with a scope already on board. Not the greatest scope, but certainly good enough to hit bottle tops at 100 yards consistently. Synthetic stock.

Has killed many squirrels.

I have a savage 93R17 TR and I'm starting to really like it...the trigger is exceptional but what I really love is how positive the extraction is on the gun...it really flings the spent brass unlike my CZ 452. For a 17 right now I'd say its a toss up between a CZ or a Savage model 93.

The Savage 93 variants or a CZ 452 or 455 would be my pick.
If you get a new CZ455, you can swap barrel kits and have a .22lr and/or .22 Magnum as well.

The only complaint I have against the Savage 93R17 (blued, heavy barrel) that I have is that occasionally it doesn't feed smoothly, sometimes it doesn't pick up the next round in the magazine. I've tried various types of ammo, and 2 different mags, and sometimes you still have to fiddle with it.

That being said, my best 5-shot group I shot with it was 1.125" at 145 yards with a full-value crosswind.

Those CZ swappable units sure sound interesting, though!

Cheers!
