About 20 years ago, I talked with a guy who was a Marine at Pearl Harbor. He told me about standing guard at night by the overturned Utah and hearing the guys trapped inside tapping against her hull. The tapping got weaker as the days passed, and by the fourth day it was silent. Some guys were pulled out, but others were too deep in the hull to get at before the water seeped in or they ran out of air.
That will stay in my memory forever, and I said an extra prayer for those guys in particular.
