death at Georgia firing range

Any GA TFLers hear about someone getting killed at a Forest Park range? This morning on the Neal Boortz web page he mentioned it, but he was busy ranting about Amanda Davis telling viewers that you must have a license to get a gun in GA, so he didn't give any details on what happened. So what happened and where?

I saw the story last night on tv. I emailed Fox5 this morning to complain about their misinformation. I don't have any details but I will since I know a few people that shoot IPSC matches there.

ANOTHER BIT OF BRILLIANCE FROM TELEVISION NEWS

This one happened last night on Atlanta's Fox News, Channel 5. They were
doing a story about someone who was accidentally shot and killed on a Forest
Park firing range yesterday. The news story contained a list of things you
should know and do if you own a gun. You know the drill, trigger locks and
all of that. Then, the clincher. Anchor Amanda Davis looks into the
television camera and says "Remember, you must have a license to own a
handgun."

WRONG. Absolutely wrong! There is absolutely NO requirement whatsoever in
Georgia that anyone obtain a license before they can own a handgun!

No, I'm not blaming Amanda Davis. Some fresh-faced, ill-informed young
liberal in the great Channel 5 newsroom wrote this nonsense. It is true that
an alert and informed anchor might have caught the stupid error, but only if
they had actually reviewed the copy beforehand.

What's the deal in these TV newsrooms? Does anybody there give a flying
damn about accuracy? Is this just a politically correct anti-gun agenda at
work?

Now ... do you think there's any chance of a correction tonight?

All I heard was part of what was said on Channel 5 last night.

Said the guy shot himself in the chest, at the firing range.

No one seemed to know how it happened, and they're sending off the gun to be checked for mechanical problems.
 
I emailed channel 5 to complain and this is the reply from Bud Veazey, Fox5 News operations manager:

There is no excuse for any error in fact. I will not make any excuses for
the error we made last night. I would like to point out the we made an
on-air correction as soon as we realized a mistake was made.
The error resulted when one of our writers in rewriting a previous script
misinterpreted some information. Unfortunately, the error was not caught in
the editorial process and it got on the air. We regret the mistake and have
taken steps to make it less likely that such an error in fact will occur
again.
Our goal is to always report the news fairly and accurately, but news
reporting, like any human endeavor, will never be perfect. We are always
willing to own up to our mistakes and make corrections when necessary.
We welcome your comments and criticism.
 
It would help (and Boortz should know better) that when you bitch about a TV station, GIVE THE CALL LETTERS! (WAGA) makes it a LOT easier to find where they live, to out of towners.

I thought Fox had their act together, but I guess that's just national news.

Was this GA range anywhere near AL? There is another thread about some unsafe gun handlers at a public range there, maybe they drove over?

Give AlGore another chance, that M16 wasn't loaded. 8> )

This indoor range is in Forest Park, just south of the Atlanta airport, not Alabama.
Al Gore never knew rule #1: All guns are loaded.

Re the quite reasonable question that you asked, "does anybody give a flying dam about accuracy"? Likely there are some people who do, but they are obviously not in control of either how the scripts are written, or how they are delivered (broadcast) and or the anchors simply do not care/know the difference, take your pick.

Perhaps when/if they do a telephone survey about viewer/listener attitudes toward the station, and people simply hung up, then they might begin to get a message, just maybe, though probably not.

Re the posted response from the station, it seems that somebody there does care about accuracy, which is a lot more than can be said about some outlets.
