Bush Dismisses Gloomy CIA Report on Iraq

Reuters

Sept. 21, 2004 — NEW YORK (Reuters) - President Bush, determined to put an optimistic face on deadly conditions in Iraq, said on Tuesday that the CIA was just guessing when it said the war-racked country was in danger of slipping into civil war.

"The CIA laid out several scenarios. It said that life could be lousy, life could be OK, life could be better. And they were just guessing as to what the conditions might be like," Bush told reporters during a picture-taking session with Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.

Bush and Allawi met for 45 minutes on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

The CIA, which has been blamed for spectacular lapses involving the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and prewar Iraqi weapons capabilities, gave Bush a report last July that presented a bleak outlook for Iraq.

The classified document, known as a National Intelligence Estimate, predicted three possible scenarios ranging from a tenuous stability to political fragmentation and civil war.

But Bush said he was confident Iraq would emerge as a peaceful democratic nation because of the determination of the Iraqi people to build a free society.

He said he expected Allawi's visit to the United States would help convince Americans not to be discouraged by disturbing news reports from the country.

"The Iraqi citizens are defying the pessimistic predictions," Bush said.

"The American people have seen horrible scenes on our TV screens. And the prime minister will be able to say to them that in spite of the sacrifices being made, in spite of the fact that Iraqis are dying, and U.S. troops are dying as well, that there is a will among the Iraqi people to succeed."

Allawi told reporters his interim government and its U.S.-led allies were winning against the insurgents but that progress was being ignored by media coverage.

In October 2002, a National Intelligence Estimate argued that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and helped the administration justify its decision to go to war. Large stockpiles of such weapons have not been found.

President Bush, determined to put an optimistic face on deadly conditions in Iraq, said on Tuesday that the CIA was just guessing when it said the war-racked country was in danger of slipping into civil war. Yeah.... all those experts on middle east politics and ethnic factions were just "guessing"... as opposed to Bush, who has God whispering in his ear.

Yeah.... all those experts on middle east politics and ethnic factions were just "guessing"... as opposed to Bush, who has God whispering in his ear.

Thats funny, these experts were wrong about WMD being in Iraq.

I find it funny that Pres. Bush believes the worst of the WMD stories and goes to war with Iraq and is faulted for it. Now he is stupid for not beleiving the worst of the CIA's predictions on what might happen in Iraq.

Hint:
A military operation can always go 1 of 3 ways, Great, Ok, and bad.

Voicing your opinion that it will go ok and might turn out great is supporting 2/3 of the CIA document.

Yeah! We should take John Kerry's advice and just run away.

At least that's what he advocated last week; does anyone know his position this week?

So Bush was wrong for listening to the CIA about the WMD, but is now wrong for not listening to them? Quit your pathetic Bush bashing bountyhunter

I have talked with a few Guardsmen who are are home on leave. And I have seen a few posts here. What they say is that we are rebuilding the Iraqui infrastructure. Schools are opening again, power is back everywhere, banking and commerce are back on track, etc.

And there are still pockets of resistance. Big surprise.

Am I living in a fantasy land?

How long was it after the revolutionary war before all British troops were out of America? Furthermore, how long before Britain stopped all hostilities?

If you want another example of how long it will take to stop all hostilities ain a newly formed country, how's Israel doing? Or many African states, for that matter?

Uhhhhh............missionary????

Folks, the sad fact is that the Isamofascists and their allies in the media and on the political left WANT you and me to believe the Iraq is an irredeemable hell hole and that every honest effort made there by us is made in vain. They are living proof of the Josef Goebbels line about saying a lie loud enough, long enough and to enough people. It's still a lie, folks. We will prevail in Iraq, we will place the Iraqi people on the path away from religious totalitarianism and towards self determination and we will return or troops home.

I'd like to see Ronald Reagan's former CIA analyst Ray McGovern debate George and his current CIA Director Mr. Skull & Bones Porter Goss on live TV, among other subjects ;)

"How long was it after the revolutionary war before all British troops were out of America?"

The live ones or the dead ones? Some of the dead ones are still here.

"Furthermore, how long before Britain stopped all hostilities?"

The War of 1812?

How long after WWII did the last Japanese soldier surrender? IIRC, it was in the 70s or so?

Wars don't always have nice, neat endings, especially this kind. Only a fool or a leftist (but I repeat myself) would have expected Iraq to be a fully free, peaceful, mature democracy (or republic - not sure what they've cooked up there) all nicely wrapped up with a bow in just a few months.

Japan in WWII

I was watching one of those History Channel shows and it said that after Japan surrendered, we stayed for 10 years rebuilding and such.

The fact is all this stuff happened in wars we won. Has happened, will happen. The thing that makes me discount the dire situation is the fact that Iraqi men are still signing up to be police officers.

So our people are over there being shot at and targeted because of the president. Iraqi men are signing up to be shot at and targeted.

How long would we have stayed in WWII if the news media had access to every bomb explosion that killed or injured our troops?

On a side note, what would have happened if Micheal Moore existed during the McCarthy Hearings.

Oh, yes I forgot about integrity, they recognized when and when not to film.

Back then they wanted the truth of the story... Not the best spin that can be created by it.

I do long for the day when people who actually know the subject is the one to write the article.

A buddy of mine just retired out of our old unit on Okinawa, so I'd say it's more like going on 60 years. I have a pretty sharp eye, and I don't recall seeing any Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force bases here in the states, but we sure have a bunch of bases all over Japan.

At the very least you/they could make forged copies available for our perusal. Don't let Rather make you look like a bunch of amateurs. Have some pride. ;)

BH-before you wind yourself up like a cheap watch over this stuff, just remember....

EXPERT: Ex is a has-been, and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure.

I'll take the word of people who have their boots on the ground over there, dealing with the situation day in and day out, before I ever listen to an "expert".

Right; and just compare our level of taxation since our succession of government administrations and Congress have signed us over to "occupy and rebuild" since 1945 and continue to do so.

This perpetual war for perpetual peace will have us on par with europa on the aggregate rate of taxation before very long.
