The House has voted to overturn the District's
ban on handguns.

The vote comes two days after Mayor Tony Williams and Police Chief Charles Ramsey spent several hours testifying before a House committee that the ban makes the city safer, and that crime would increase if it were overturned.

Williams says it's discouraging when members of Congress who don't represent the city -- in his words -- "try to shove their laws down our throats."

Increase crime in DC? How could you do that, issue every democrat a machine gun? Maybe throw in a flamethrower for all males over 18yoa?

Honestly, I think that Bush would veto it (his one and only veto) if it did pass the senate. Yes, I voted for him so I can say what I wish :D.

To remove the ban would put the pols into a state of fear. They know what they do and that they are messing with the American people, and to actually have guns where they have to work everyday scares the heck outta them.

The ban is not there to protect the people, it's there to protect the politicians.

Yeppers,

No handguns, but at least you could assemble or actually load your rifle and shotgun. :barf: :barf: :barf:

Of course, bow-tie Williams, Ramsey, Holmes-Norton and all the usual subjects are bleating in four-part harmony.

I think it allows handguns made before 1976... so it would be a good time to go shopping for a East German Mak if you live in DC.

Mike: It is my understanding (based on last night's TV news) that the proposed House legislation would allow DC residents to have loaded handguns in their home AFTER REGISTRATION.

For non-DC area readers: Unbelievably, handguns in one’s home must be disassembled and unloaded in the District, which defeats the purpose IMHO.

Best regards -- Roy

Guys, this is not about handguns.

If you want to own a handgun legally in the District, you'd better have already owned it as of September 1976, and to have registered it by February 1977. In other words, unless you dutifully registered your handgun nearly three decades ago, the sales, transfer or posession of handguns in the District is verboten.

Right now, it is illegal to have an assembled rifle or shotgun in your home, unless you have a trigger lock in use. God forbid you should consider loading it for HD purposes.

Carrying a handgun in the District is prohibited. All firearms are to be kept at one`s home or place of business.

All firearms must be unloaded and disassembled or locked with a trigger lock except when kept at a registrant`s place of business or while being used for lawful "recreational" purposes. A D.C. license to carry a pistol is needed for one`s home or business and the pistol must also have been registered prior to September 24, 1976.

Self-defense in one`s home with a firearm is therefore legally precluded

The House measure applies to longguns and longguns only.
