David Mamet, Writer & Gunowner

Many of you have probably seen a film or two written by David Mamet: ‘Glengarry Glenross,’ ‘The Untouchables’(good gun movie), ‘Ronin’ (written under an alias, and a GREAT gun movie!). It seems Mamet is also a hunter and gun-owner. He has written essays about both. One I particularly remember was when he was telling of how he had decided to sell one of his 1911s. It had been heavily customized, with about a grand worth of modifications. Mamet arranged for it to be auctioned off at a big gun show in Virginia. He didn’t attend the auction himself, and later got a very distressing call from the auctioneer. The 1911 had only sold for a couple of hundred bucks! The auctioneer offered to return the auction fee, but Mamet refused, saying a deal’s a deal.
Fast-forward a few months. Mamet is in Virginia on a hunting trip. He visits some gun shops in town. Low and behold, in a fancy display case is his old 1911. He asks how much it’s selling for. The store owner says it’s not for sale, and then proceeds to brag about he got it. Some snooty New Yorker-type had put it up for auction. The shop owner also worked as an auctioneer, and when he saw this fine .45 that was going on the block, he decided to keep it himself. He just sent a couple of hundred bucks to the loser who had sent him the gun, claiming that that was the highest bid received. OUCH!
That’s the short version of the story. I don’t do justice to Mamet though, as he’s one hell of a writer. I will also note that one of Mamet’s regular actors, Joseph Mantegna (incidentally, a very good ‘Spenser’ in an A&E movie) has participated in recent NRA shoots, along with perennial cop actor (and Vietnam vet) Dennis Franz.
Just wanted everyone to know that there are a few more entertainment types who believe in the 2nd Amendment.

well, geez....don't leave us hanging.

What did Mamet say to the shopowner/theif?

‘The Untouchables’(good gun movie)

Last time I tried to watch it I just about burst a blood vessel. Talk about glorifying the Feds and their intrusive un-Constitutional ways! Not that Al was a nice guy, either...

Two replies:
Mamet knew he'd been conned and felt pretty stupid. After all, he knew first-hand quite a bit about cons. So he just let it slide, perhaps out of embarrassment.
As for 'The Untouchables'--I'm no fan of needless government intrusion and am a big foe of most forms of Prohibition, alcohol and otherwise. Still, I thought it was a good, enjoyable film and DePalma knows how to stage a gunfight.
