Dating a S&W 45 ACP

I am trying to find some history on and value of a S&W model 1917 45 ACP revolver that my wife recently enherited. It has five screws, checkered grip, landyard clip on the bottom of the grip. It is not army issued. Is there a way to find out info like date of mfg from the serial number?
