Dateline rape article: only YOU are responsible for your own safety

Interesting article on Dateline tonight.
After a half hour of going around hotels where women have been raped, videotaping sleeping security guards, walking the halls, getting kays to rooms by claiming that they "locked their key and wallet in their room" etc......they finally stated that "in the end, it is you and only you that is responsible for your own personal safety".

Hm, took them that long to figure it out. I wonder when everyone else will.

Basically they showed us that in a motel, you are not protected at all, and people can even get into your room. How exactly are they expecting you to protect yourself? A gun?
I really wonder what these type of people are thinking when they think of "protecting themselves"? Putting your keys between your fingers and scratching the bad guy?
It seems there is a quandary there. Only YOU are responsible to protect yourself, but.....if they don't approve of a gun...then how?

"in the end, it is you and only you that is responsible for your own personal safety".

MY GOD!!! what a concept!!!!

Yes, it's hard to believe that NBC had the smarts to reach that conclusion. I doubt, though, that NBC will ever go to the next logical step and figure out that if people are responsible for their own safety, they must also have the means to carry out that responsibility.

No, no silly proles. You are responsible for your own safety. Therefore, you are responsible for voting to disarm everyone around you since the only reason for them to be armed is to hurt you and once unarmed they will desist. It will then be your responsibility to vote for all kinds of other good stuff that makes you really safe and snuggly wuggly, once the troublemakers are disarmed. Catching on?

Seriously, you guys are viewing this through warrior-colored glasses. To you, it is natural and fine that you are responsible for your own safety. To them, stating that is as good as saying that something is really wrong. Their assumption is that you SHOULD NOT have to be responsible for your own safety, so when they say that, they are pointing out a problem with the motels run, not reminding you of your responsibilities. Just wait, 99% of their audience will understand perfectly. We just don't think the way they do.

What is a sad problem from the perspective of the innocent female (or male), potential victim is the general consensis that all too many have a false sense of security. They think that since nothing violent has happened to them so far, then it never will. "After all, I'll be in places where there will be others around. Nobody would dare try to harm me in public w/witnesses around and public to protect me." OR "I'm tougher than you think. If anyone tried to mess w/me, I'd take my keys and hit them in the face." This type of attitude is shear arrogance and self deception on the part of the general public. Sad to say, some learn from their mistakes rather than from others. "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Prov. 16:18

I'll refrain from saying anything about public trusting government employees to be omnipresent personal body guards 7-24, lest anyone misinterpret the statement as "bashing" any particular group. jpfo.org/dial911anddie.htm

I think that the best we can do is to educate the public, support those doing likewise, help those who want our help, and let the chips fall where they may. I've seen lots of suffering. I've met folks that want to learn how to protect themselves and those who could care less, because hotel security w/take care of that part of their lives. Some people never learn.

Yea, NBC got it right. We are all responsible for our own saftey. So what does NBC and the rest of the media recommend?

I shall assume that everyone here has seen "George of the Jungle".

There is a scene that I feel is particularly apropo in this situation.

The ape named "Ape" is caught by the two thugs and is being dragged off in a cage. One of the thugs realizes that they are going the wrong way, to which Ape utters this classic line:

"DUUUH"

For some reason, NBC always seems to put me in mind of that quote...

While the LEO forces have been telling the populace for years that it's your responsibility for your own protection. I agree with that wholeheartedly. Let me deal with the situation as best I can.

And to that end, I'm also being charged with being reasonable with that resolve. I'm not to use deadly force unless there's no other way. I mustn't exercise malice, or disregard for human life. I must always consider flight before fight.
Of course, it goes without saying, that if you have something to lose, other than your life, you'll obey that doctrine.
And why not? I mean, there are so many potential Nobel Prize winners out there, that we must give them every chance in the world to achieve their fullest potential.

Meanwhile, I'll still take my Martial Arts classes, and continue to acquire firearms/ammo to maintain my resolve in self preservtion, regardless of the general opinion, and the status quo.

Best Regards,
Don
