Dang Mossberg 500 light mounting. HELP!

I'm about to give up on mounting a light on my Mossberg 500. I guess because I have the cruiser variant with longer mag tube, some options that would work on other 500s won't on mine. I want to mount the clamp rail piece on the gun, but can't because of the long piece of metal coming off the heatshield and running between the barrel and the mag tube. My question is:

Can I cut or otherwise remove this piece without affecting the safety/reliability of the weapon? If not, are there after-market heat shields that don't have that long piece? What the hell is that long piece for anyway? Is my only other viable light mounting option to replace the forend with a Surefire?

That sucks. I have the normal 500 and don't have that silly bar thing. I don't know what to tell you.. I usually don't like cutting gun parts, I will be more prone to mess with the light clamp thing to make it work. It looks like the light clamp has to go all the way around the tube, kinda like a circle over a circle. I would try to find a way to make the light clampy part look like a C instead of a O and maybe some how notch out the part where it hits that bar. Does that make sense? I gotta relook at the pics here.

If you could somehow cut out a little section of the top clampy part, which looks like it'll give u 2 top clampy parts afterwards, would most likely be enough to hold it on with no problems. I'm not sure what that heatshield bar part thing is or what it's for, but me personally would leave it. good luck, let us know what u end up doing.

Cut just enough of the plastic extension for the light clamp to fit in. The plastic extension is made to be cut, as Mossberg uses the same heatshield on the 20" and the 18" guns. Or better yet, ditch the heatshield.
